Re: HBO's The Leftovers

So I just finished the book.

It kinda is a hollow outline of what the HBO show has become, and season 2 ends kind of where the book does.

Spoiler:
Jill almost joins the Guilty Remnant, but decides against it and hangs with the Frost twins to try and remain in a someone normal lifestyle.

Laurie and Meg are super close, not enemies like in the show. Meg kills herself in front of Laurie to make herself a martyr for the Remnant's cause.

Kevin is the mayor of Mapleton, not Chief of Police.

Tom and Christine try to go to Mapleton after Holy Wayne pleads guilty to all of his sexual crimes. Christine abandons him and the baby like the show, and Tom just leaves the baby girl at Kevin's doorstep. Kevin is Tom's biological father in the book, not stepson like the show.

Aimee and Jill have a closer relationship in the book. Aimee stays with the Garveys for an extended amount of time, and moves out at the end after almost fucking Kevin before his softball game.

Nora is much more depressed and dark in the book. She's damn near suicidal for a while. She wants to leave Mapleton after attempting an eventual failed relationship with Kevin, but stops when she goes to his house to drop off a letter... and finds the baby on his doorstep.

The book's ending implies that Nora stays with Kevin and the baby to start a new family like the end of season 1.

Pea soup, much like clam chowder, needs to have that consistency first, that you can stand the spoon up in it, but the spoon soon tilts, that's the consistency you want.
Number two: Uh, pea soup on it's own can be a little bland. It wants, uh, a fairly aggressive peppering and salting.
Number three: Pea soup needs a fine dice of ham. Not bacon, not any other meat, not turkey. It needs a fine dice of ham.

Uh, number five: Pea soup is best made, uh, by hand, not out of a Campbell's can. And the key to pea soup, you want a ham bone, uh, for the stock you make, uh, to, to boil your peas.

I think Nora is going to kill Kevin, because someone will tell her it's the only way to see her children again. It doesn't work and she has to leave her life behind and live somewhere in Australia.

Nora got that phone call from an institution that believes she is the reincarnation of Azrael, the Angel of Death.

I believe she will be possessed by something to make her kill Jesus (Kevin) and spend the rest of her life as a recluse.

Forgot this show started up again last night. Lots of good weird stuff. So Nora apparently moves to Australia. Presumably to be with Kevin's dad.

Looking forward to see how it all plays out. A show like this can go in any direction.

They used the same song that was used in True Detective too. Sign of the Judgement.

Here's the whole song. I kinda like this version.

So there is a cult killing Kevins in Australia. They're definitely going to be meeting THE Kevin soon.

The "future Nora" I bet is just a radiation-fed Nora in the present.

They show him getting ready to drown Kevin in the season preview. Jr. talks about having to hold him down and Sr. says he wishes he could do it instead.

Kevin Jr. is going to really die in Australia. I think Nora will kill him.

I thought for a minute that Nora was going to kill herself, and then I remembered that we see her in a flash forward.

Kevin is going coo coo for Cocopuffs again. And I guess the rest of the show will take place in Australia, at least for the main story line.

My personal guess: Nora does get to ride the radiation machine and it transports her to Purgatory. Her kids and husband aren't there because they've gone onto heaven.

Kevin eventually takes a ride in it too or dies and Nora doesn't want anything to do with him.

So the dude that lit himself on fire in the previous episode said he answered that he would not kill the twin and was denied. Nora said that she would. I don't think there is any right answer, then that group contacts you later to say, "Just joshin'. Glad you didn't kill yourself. Ready to ride the lightning?"

Yeah, they want to see how desperate you are I think.

Nora was a little too quick, on the plane, to say that excuse about being in a cohabitative toxic relationship where they hate each other.

This episode was probably the most crazy one out of the whole series. And that's saying it after seeing International Assassin.

So "God", David Burton, was the same man at the hotel in IA, and the same one on the bridge who whispered something to Kevin before he took Patty to the well.

I think Kevin is going to see this guy again when he goes to the Other Side.

In the credits one of the extras was called "Vigorous Handjob Guy".

And yeah, maybe that guy is "God". He was the one that told Kevin how to get back to the real world the second time he died. Probably a good bet they'll meet again when Kevin gets Salem witch trialed.

Didn't remember any of that until I read this. Do you guys re-watch these before the new season? Not just about this show, but with others as well, I'm surprised what people remember.

But yeah, that show was a big WTF in the context of a WTF series. Like so much weird on top of weird, that it makes the rest of the show look normal by comparison.

I read the Reddit after the episode on Sunday night.

Also, there was a deleted scene from Kevin and "God" talking on the bridge, before he killed Patti, and apparently he tells Kevin he IS God.

Re: HBO's The Leftovers

Hell of an episode last night.

2 more episodes left for the greatest show on TV, for which Better Call Saul will take the title once this ends.

Laurie proves once again how self-righteous she thinks she is. For all the shit Kevin gets on this show, he is the most "SANE" person on this show.

I mean, the first thing with pea soup is the texture, okay?
I've had watery pea soup, it's AWFUL.
Uh, I've had gelatinous, thick pea soup, it's TERRIBLE.
Uh, number four: Uh, pea soup scorches easily. You don't wanna heat it on a high heat. You wanna heat it on medium low, just until it's warmed through.
Uh, number five: Pea soup is best made, uh, by hand, not out of a Campbell's can. And the key to pea soup, you want a ham bone, uh, for the stock you make, uh, to, to boil your peas.

There's only 2 left? Wasn't that episode 6? That sucks. Even when I feel like an episode isn't doing a lot, they kick in with that eerie piano music and it changes the mood. I'm not one that usually notices that stuff (consciously anyway), but damn, the power of music in film/TV.

I bet Kevin is going to see Laurie in the hotel and completely be freaked out.

The 14th came and nothing happened.

Kevin is still some higher being in some sense... I predict he's going to find Nora and try to save her from going into the machine.

I think he lost his immortality when he killed off his "twin".

This is an insane sentence with no context.
