Kiss my pasty white pimply buttocks, Turtleneck. Anita M. knows Clare is the Gateway to the North, as does the local Chamber of Commerce. Who better than Anita M. and nearby businesses to know where the North begins?

Shepard is the gateway to Mt. Pleasant, Alma is the gateway to Shepard, Ithaca is the gateway to Alma, St. Johns is the gateway to Ithaca, Lansing is the gateway to Ithaca, and GreenWay's house is the gateway to Lansing. So basically it all comes back to you. You are the gateway to Up North. We will all start car pooling from your place. Please make room in your driveway for Travis's Chevy Sonic.

Not usually, this is a pretty low key neighborhood. The wildest it gets in on the weekends when the kids (10-12yr olds approx) next door arrive with their ATVs - my yard contains part of the trail they can ride w/o Dad along. So some days it's hours and hours and them going around there like NASCAR drivers.

I kind of miss being a kid listening to them - life and having fun is so much simpler then.

COMINS — Hundreds turned out for events and fireworks to celebrate American independence July 3.

Attendees were offered a variety of activities prior to the fireworks including tractor rides, inflatables and a mechanical bull. The event also included musical performances by Chester’s Habit and Strike Three.

and don't forget tonight is the GrandDaddy in Mio at the dam at dusk.

I've seen a few around here the last couple of years - never used to think of this area as bear country.

Black bear boom in Michigan cheered by hunters, but it's trouble for beekeepers

Mio and area Doings - Page 16 636350255058580984-AP-16242697759111

Black bear populations are on the rise, particularly in the northern Lower Peninsula. The number of black bears 1 year old and older in that region has soared 29% since 2012 — up 47% since 2000 — to 2,112 bears, according to the Michigan Department of Natural Resources. Upper Peninsula adult black bear populations are up 11% in that time frame, to 9,699 bears.

Nowhere is the bear boom stronger than the 10-county area of western Michigan from the Leelanau Peninsula south to Muskegon County, designated by the DNR as the Baldwin Bear Management Unit, one of nine units in the U.P. and the northern Lower Peninsula.

The population growth is no accident. It's a result of carefully restricted hunting and a desire by the DNR and hunters to bolster the bear numbers, in no small part to make for successful, enjoyable hunts for bear hunters that might have to wait 10 to 12 years to land a license in the Baldwin unit, through the state's points-based, quasi-lottery draw. Some 2,845 hunters applied to hunt bear in the Baldwin unit last season. Just 80 got licenses.

Not quite Mio, but Grayling is now the cultural epicenter of Michigan.

Grayling dusts off downtown with brewpubs, galleries

But those plans failed, so he settled for Grayling. In the middle of December. Today, Plan B has turned out very well for Vargo, and certainly for Grayling, which is seeing an upsurge in restaurants, galleries and other developments in its once-fading downtown.

Local business leaders say one property that is prime for redevelopment is the site that once housed Bear Archery Co., which started making bowhunting products here in 1947. They envision mixed-use townhomes, condos and retail.

The Meo Mio Stitchers, a group of the national Quilts of Valor organization, presented four quilts to World War II veterans at the Veterans of Foreign Wars post in Mio July 11.

The group provides quilts to honor veterans with a comforting quilt to thank them for our protection.
