Utica Ballpark Offers ‘Peanut-Free’ Game For Allergic Fans

To accommodate fans with life-threatening allergies, the burgeoning United Shore Professional Baseball League will be featuring a “peanut-free” night at Jimmy John’s Field on Wednesday, Aug. 10.

According to an announcement on Facebook over the weekend, the 7:25 p.m. game between the Eastside Diamond Hoppers and the Birmingham Bloomfield Beavers will be without some common items normally found at this ballpark and others — including peanuts, Cracker Jacks, Nestle Crunch Bars and Drumsticks, and any other item containing peanuts.

Nice, I guess, that this country is going to such great lengths to avoid being exclusionary.

First year a home run for United Shore Professional Baseball League

Appleby said the league will make small changes to how it operates next year, but its biggest update will be expansion.

The USPBL hopes to add a fourth team by April 1. That team likely will be from somewhere outside of Utica, and it’ll have its own stadium. All three of its current teams played in Utica during the inaugural season.

Appleby said several cities around Michigan have contacted him about being the site for an expansion team. He also said a few cities around the Midwest have been in talks with the USPBL, but could not disclose which cities due to confidentiality agreements.

The league would like its next stadium built by May 1 so that it’ll be ready for next season, which runs May 11-Sept. 10.

Interesting. Well, we will see how it does. I will probably go to a couple more games next year for the hell of it.

Celebrity charity softball game at Utica stadium includes notable former athletes

Tomorrow @ 2PM if you're not busy and in the area.

The current list of celebrities scheduled to play includes a few MSU luminaries, although it seems Russell Byrd might have prior obligations:

Jason Andreas, former Michigan State basketball player
Tim Bograkos, former Michigan State basketball player
Chris Hill, former Michigan State basketball player
Mat Ishbia, former Michigan State basketball player
Dave Rayner, former Michigan State and NFL player
Ryan Van Dyke, former Michigan State football player

You'll also have the opportunity of heckling Rob Parker an David Terrell.

As a somewhat proud resident of Shelby Twp, home of Utica, I thought this was it was a pretty cool idea when it was first announced. The more I've thought about it, I don't think this league sees a season opener in year three.  Tickets are $12.00 minimum unless you want to sit on the grass for $8.00.

If you've ever been to downtown Utica, you know what a mess ingress/egress is going to be for 400 or 500 vehicles coming and going before/after the game (at least until attendance wanes).

Once people have been to a game, I just don't think there will be compelling reason to go back.  Sort of a been there done that kind of thing. Hopefully I'm wrong, but I don't think it's sustainable.

I'll say this, though, I drive by Jimmy John's field every day and they did a real nice job with it.  The question is, what does the community do with it three years from now when the league has folded.

This will draw people from further away than you think. I know people that regularly go to games in Toledo.

If you build it, they will come. For it's money they have, but peace they lack.

I drove by on a weekend and cars were parked every which way on grass embankments along Hall Rd or whatever. How hard to build a parking structure that can handle a couple of hundred cars?

If it's the area I think you're referring to, that was blacktopped within the last 10 days. It's actually VIP parking $$$.

The original plan was to build a 3-4 story parking deck across the river where the gravel lot is now. I can't remember exactly why that didn't done; something to do with environmental cleanup or brownfield maybe. Or maybe the funding the fell through.

I went there for the first time today. It was pretty neat. Not in a "I'm gonna go back for no reason" type of way but more of a "were gonna get a party bus and stop there, be hammered, get kicked out, then resume drinking on the bus" type of way.

I decided I'm a huge diamond hoppers fan tho. #ES4L

Haha. Well, I got there late. Pulled up in front of the park and said "where should I park?" High school kid said "this is the VIP lot, you have to go to lot A." I said "where is lot A, first time here dude." He said "whatever, nevermind, just go up there and park to the left."

So it was great for me... My buddy parked like a block away with minimal difficulty once he figured out where to go.
