Maya Washington Movie

Post by LooseGoose on 2016-06-20, 12:05

Spent 10 minutes in the search and still can't find our old thread on this.

A daughter learns her father's legacy

In the spring of 1963, Gene Washington sat in his La Porte, Texas, living room listening to Dan Boisture, a Michigan State University football coach, make the case for why Washington should join the team. At the time, Washington wouldn't be allowed to attend any of the major universities in Texas during the era of segregation.

His education would be covered with a full athletic scholarship at Michigan State. Duffy Daugherty, the Hall of Fame coach who'd been conducting clinics around Texas, had heard good things about Washington.

Washington remembers this day not only for how it changed his life, but because it was the first time a white person had ever set foot in his home.

In quick succession, he experienced a series of firsts as he headed to Michigan: riding on an airplane, entering a restaurant through the front door, living with and making white friends. Once in East Lansing, he and the other black members of the team -- Bubba Smith, George Webster, and Clinton Jones -- would comprise the first fully integrated lineup in Michigan State history, going on to win the National Championship in 1965 and 1966. The following year, they were drafted into the NFL in the first round, all while the civil rights movement blazed around them.

For all the elements of historical and cultural significance that Washington's story offers, there's one person who was mostly unaware of it: his youngest daughter, Maya. Growing up in the suburbs of Minneapolis in the 1980s and '90s, long after her father's career with Michigan State and the Minnesota Vikings had ended, she remembers having the inkling that her dad was somebody -- she just didn't know who.

"In the community, he'd say hi to people, or people would say hi to him, and I remember saying, 'Do you know them?' and he'd say 'No.' But now I realize, maybe people were recognizing him," says Maya.

Ask her if she's worried.

Also, ask her if she too enjoys it when an unarmed black teen gets murdered by a gun

I'm a big fan of the "what's the last song you listened to and why" question... it's a window into the person's soul.

Truthfully, the takeaway for me is that you believe humans have souls.

first rule of interviewing - know your audience.

And I would never want to let MSU fans down.

It looks like it's finally getting released.....maybe we'll get some good publicity?

Henning: Film recalls groundbreaking recruiting at Michigan State

When he walked through the door, the front door mind you, of the Kellogg Center that day in 1963 and was told he would have lunch, the thought was as alien to Gene Washington as the next hour’s experience.

He could sit at a table at a public eatery? A white waitress would ask him for his order? There would be no obstruction, no caustic words, no sneers, no expulsion?

A teenager from Texas had no concept of such a moment or day. But here was a new reality, at Michigan State University, where a young man who lived 15 minutes outside of Houston came to realize not all of America was as racially poisoned as the South.

“You have to look at it from a personal standpoint,” Washington was saying this week during a phone chat. “Everything was very new. We had, in Texas, no relationship with white people. All of a sudden you leave an all-black situation for a completely white scene, and yet everybody was very embracing — as if what we were experiencing down south wasn’t that way at Michigan State.”
