I think the last time I willingly listened to metal was July 27, 1979.

Jethro Tull - after all they're Metal Grammy winners.

From wiki:
Metallica, who were expected to win the inaugural award for their album ...And Justice for All, lost to Jethro Tull whose album Crest of a Knave won instead.

Dio

Metallica

Hammerfall

Iron Maiden

My sons loved Pantera, never really got into them. I'm more of a "hard rock" guy than a metal guy though. And really I don't know if Dio and Hammerfall count as "metal" but I loved Ronnie saw him live many, many times.

More of industrial metal, but Nine Inch Nails is still the GOAT.

Pea soup, much like clam chowder, needs to have that consistency first, that you can stand the spoon up in it, but the spoon soon tilts, that's the consistency you want.
Number two: Uh, pea soup on it's own can be a little bland. It wants, uh, a fairly aggressive peppering and salting.
Number three: Pea soup needs a fine dice of ham. Not bacon, not any other meat, not turkey. It needs a fine dice of ham.
Uh, number four: Uh, pea soup scorches easily. You don't wanna heat it on a high heat. You wanna heat it on medium low, just until it's warmed through.
Uh, number five: Pea soup is best made, uh, by hand, not out of a Campbell's can. And the key to pea soup, you want a ham bone, uh, for the stock you make, uh, to, to boil your peas.

I was just using the term generally. Never got into Iron Maiden as much as I wanted to. Same with Judas Priest. A select few songs for sure. I should probably revisit those bands as that opinion was formed years ago. Lately I have been listening to these guys a bit.

Serious answer

COC
Korn
Deftones
Maiden (teenage years)
AC/DC (70s)
Snot
Soundgarden

Also, even though I can only take so much, Opeth is brilliant

There's the definition problems and this isn't really an argument, just my opinion. For me AC/DC falls into the "hard rock" category, not metal. I've seen people place them in both categories depending on the list though.

I think it depends on the time frame. I would also put Zeppelin in the metal category based on release dates. Perfect example is Deep Purple. Definitely a metal band when they were producing records, but now?

True enough. As far as AC/DC I was a huge fan through Back in Black - never really was into any of their material after that. I still consider "If you want Blood" one of the best live albums ever made. So I pretty much agree with your (1970s) definition on them.

this - it's a constant conversation in our house. 80's metal vs hard rock vs glam metal vs hair metal, etc

and, the strange thing, is that some bands transcend each. For instance, the Shout at the Devil record was pretty much straight up hard rock but the Crue got decidedly more glam/hair metal as they moved through the 80's. Same with Def Leppard - they started out fairly hard rock-ish with On Through the Night, High an Dry and even Pyromania to an extent. Definitely got softer and more hair/glam afterwards.

AC/DC is one band that has remained pretty much true to their roots from their inception - always just a good, pounding hard rock band with simple chords and musicianship but, nonetheless, ear-enticing.

I would always consider Motley Crue to be metal, but never considered Def Leppard metal. Maybe part of it is style/attitude. For example, at the time of Shout At the Devil, Crue had all the leather and chains, flashing the "metal sign", the pentagram, etc. Their first two albums were as metal as Ozzy or Dio. The line between hard rock and 80s traditional metal can be a bit blurred at times, I suppose, but stuff that has that extra edge to it separates metal in my mind.

By the way, threads like this blow my mind that so many of you were/are into metal. Is there some correlation between liking heavy metal and posting on a message board? Outside of my two best friends in high school, I barely knew anyone that liked metal all through middle school and high school, and even less so in college. I didn't roll with the fuck up stoners in high school or anything, so that's part of it. In fact, me and my two buddies always found it funny, because we were always the most clean-cut guys at any concert. But especially at State, no one liked metal.

I've been into music - most every kind of music - for as long as I can remember. My first concert was KISS when I was 7 years old (my parents were pretty neglectful in a lot of ways - ) - I didn't necessarily ever have the stoner/metalhead identity or stereotype.. though I had a nice cache of metal tshirts all through middle school and high school. One thing I make sure I tell me daughter (sorry For bin) is to never, EVER, get rid of your concert shirts. I ditched all of mine over the years and regret it to this day.

Meshuggah

Not much of a metal fan but I saw these guys 15 years ago or so and was impressed.

I also went through a Metallica phase (I still think the black self titled album is great, they get so much shit for it) and enjoyed what I've heard from Megadeth.

I'm a fan of most of what has been mentioned here, especially 80s NWOBHM like Iron Maiden, and the 90s trash scene. Since that's been covered pretty well I'll just add a few more modern favorites.

Mastodon - The definitive stoner metal band.
Darkest Hour - Hardcore/death metal. Best album is Undoing Ruin.
Strung Out - Kick ass punk/hardcore
Unearth - Metalcore, good for working out.
As I Lay Dying - Metalcore
In Flames - Melodic Death Metal. The Jester Race is amazing.
Lamb of God - nothing needs to be said about these guys.
At the gates - basically invented melodic death metal
The Black Dahlia Murder - Melodic death metal
Killswitch Engage - Metalcore
Machine Head - Listen to The Blackening. It's great.
Between the Buried and Me - Do yourself a favor and give these guys a chance. Holy shit.
Animals as Leaders - Crazy talented. No vocals. Listen to the song Kascade first.

Melodic Death Metal?   OK, I may listen to a few of those.

I've been enjoying Farmikos lately, some good stuff there.

Melodic death metal is basically death metal mixed with New wave british heavy metal (Iron Maiden). Twin guitars, playing different riffs weaved together. Often one guitar will "solo" while the other plays rhythm riffs in the background. It blends together to make a really kick ass sound.

The song Moonshield by In Flames is a great example to start and even includes some acoustic guitar. The Jester's Dance and The Jester Race are also highlights from The Jester Race album.
