Vintage photos of Northern Lower ("Up North")

Post by Turtleneck on 2016-06-29, 13:23

Among the 30+ pics is the original structure of Ma Deeters in Luzerne, and downtown Mio. If anybody here is into that sort of thing.

At least 3 of these buildings are still there:

It's safe to say that most of us would rather be Up North than, well, pretty much anywhere, especially now that summer's here. With the help of Virtual Motor City and this awesome Facebook page dedicated solely to sharing information and memories about northern Michigan, we bring you these 30 delightful images to peruse while you're stuck in the office. Enjoy.

It's hard to read this without sarcasm.

I've got a whole crapload of photos that my grandfather took in the very early 1900's of the Grayling area and the AuSable River area. One of these days I'll have to scan them and post em.

He wrote a journal of his trip up there from Ann Arbor with a few of his buddies. Took a train and just lived off the land for a couple of weeks. It's pretty well written and has a bunch of pictures to go along with it. I'm thinking about getting it published.

Oh, I still go up north to get away from it all. It's just not the same with smart phones, wi fi etc.

I do turn off my phone for hours at a time and just try to relax. That's kinda the point.

In all seriousness, Bob, you should head up their just once. I know you say it's not your thing but at least you would have an informed opinion when you ridicule. Just sayin.

I'm simply making a suggestion. And again, if you hate it after you actually experiencing it, fine.

I totally get the Up North ridicule is an essential part of your schtick but a one time 3 hour drive may change your view.

meh.. we'll see. If the "up north" stories I read about here are any indication, I'd need to be in a coma.

if I ever decide to go, I'll hit you up and maybe you can help me with an itinerary.

Wait, it's that you think it's boring up north? I sincerely mean no offense, but you don't come off as a Type A, on-the-go, or partying type. You always seemed more laid back, spending time with the family, going bike riding, etc. IIRC you're from a relatively small, quiet city, and now live in another relatively small, quiet city. It's not like you're a big urban guy from NYC and living in Chicago. I'm not saying that you have to like Up North or you're a dumbass, just that based on what little I know about you, I wouldn't think that perceptions of it being boring would be the big drawback from you.

yep - grew up in a small, picturesque town.. I now live East Lansing.. definitely not into the party scene - never have been. I like quiet.. running, getting out on my bike, etc. So your assessment seems pretty accurate.

it's not that it's boring - I actually enjoy "boring" - it's just that when I/we decide to go somewhere, we usually have other places to go and see.

that's all - not sure why some people are so protective of their "up north" destinations. If they dig it, cool - I'm sure I dig going places that they wouldn't particularly enjoy. I don't see that as a character flaw or anything.

The best part of up north is shooting furry woodland creatures with a variety of weaponry! (And then grilling and eating it of course!)

Do you know how hard it is to find a metal slide anymore?
Whatever happened to the merry go rounds, or whatever they were called. 4 handles and you go in circles. I don't really see those either.

there is a little park in East Lansing that has an old skool vibe to it.. it's in the Tamarisk neighborhood - used to walk or ride bikes up there with my daughter (sorry For bin) a lot when she was little.. the old skool metal slide, merry-go-round.. it's got a vintage feel to it, for sure.

it has 3-4 of these things, too - and they're the old ones, not new ones meant to look old

That's fair enough, but when you say that you'd need to be in a coma to go, you're implying that you think it's boring (at least that's how it read to me). And that's why I thought it was odd, because the pace of Up North seems right up your alley.

As for why people are so protective of it, keep in mind that a good portion of those of us born and raised in Michigan, many of our greatest childhood memories are vacationing Up North. Many continue that and have built some of their best adult memories with their own families there. You wonder why people are protective of it? It's not a character flaw to prefer to do other things (and I doubt anyone would say that it is). However, it is a character flaw to repeatedly make fun of and scoff at something that is very important to the people that you're talking to.

FWIW, I also tend to take my vacations elsewhere for several reasons (wanting to see new things, convenience, time, etc.), so I get that. But where we'd go Up North is also the most special place in the world to me from my childhood and young adult years (getting married and having a daughter and the things we've experienced have given me different special places in my post-young adult years). I don't feel personally offended when you do your schtick of making fun of what people feel strongly about, because I know it's your schtick and you're just trying to get a rise out of people. But don't play all innocent, like people just attack you out of the blue over the Up North thing just because you don't vacation there. You're the one that is always on the sarcastic offensive about it.

I personally like the dome shaped metal bars that would be built on concrete or asphalt. If you want to learn to climb, better make the consequences of falling severe enough that you won't let go just because your hands are a little tired.
