it's not that it's boring - I actually enjoy "boring" - it's just that when I/we decide to go somewhere, we usually have other places to go and see.

that's all - not sure why some people are so protective of their "up north" destinations. If they dig it, cool - I'm sure I dig going places that they wouldn't particularly enjoy. I don't see that as a character flaw or anything.

That's fair enough, but when you say that you'd need to be in a coma to go, you're implying that you think it's boring (at least that's how it read to me).  And that's why I thought it was odd, because the pace of Up North seems right up your alley.

As for why people are so protective of it, keep in mind that a good portion of those of us born and raised in Michigan, many of our greatest childhood memories are vacationing Up North.  Many continue that and have built some of their best adult memories with their own families there.  You wonder why people are protective of it?  It's not a character flaw to prefer to do other things (and I doubt anyone would say that it is).  However, it is a character flaw to repeatedly make fun of and scoff at something that is very important to the people that you're talking to.

FWIW, I also tend to take my vacations elsewhere for several reasons (wanting to see new things, convenience, time, etc.), so I get that.  But where we'd go Up North is also the most special place in the world to me from my childhood and young adult years (getting married and having a daughter and the things we've experienced have given me different special places in my post-young adult years).  I don't feel personally offended when you do your schtick of making fun of what people feel strongly about, because I know it's your schtick and you're just trying to get a rise out of people.  But don't play all innocent, like people just attack you out of the blue over the Up North thing just because you don't vacation there.  You're the one that is always on the sarcastic offensive about it.

you should hit the mountains of North Carolina.. you'd love it.. and by "you'd love it", I mean you would LOVE it.. you really would. If you've never been, you should go....

you'd love it.

next time I stop in, maybe I could request the "Lighthouse Latte".. it's a s'more-inspired drink that has the nice finish of a summer evening Up North.. campfires, lighthouses, sand.. Facebook and Instagram.. upon the first sip, the unmistakable strains of Kid Rock are noticeable in the background along with the subtle hum of SUV's on M-22 motoring along.

Just came across this pic today.

The church on the right is still there - now the "Emma Lowery Congregational"

This is facing NNW with the 4 corners of town at the far left in this pic.

The same view today:

Yeah, once the gold ran out, there wasn't much reason to stay. Then, when the whisky run dry, prit'near anybody too lazy to move before got up and walked away.

The "Most viewed movie" leader for my lifetime.   We watched that in deer camp on the night before opening day for at least 15 years and maybe closer to 20.   Add in another random 30+ times and I know 86% of the movie by heart.

Then you've no doubt seen it way more times than me, but I always make a point to watch when it's on.
BTW, deer camp movies for us started and ended with Fletch.

A somewhat sad tale of how important that movie was to my friends and I.....we had bowling shirts made up with the nicknames Elijah, Abe, & Benny on them......the bush men scene.

He was among Clint's regulars. Like the Duke, Clint had a group he used over and over.
