tMrs wants me to teach her to play chess. Could be fun or lead to divorce. Win/win I guess.

It's perhaps an unlikely eSport, but tens of thousands of viewers are tuning in for the fast-playing, trash-talking, chair-throwing, high-stakes world of online chess.

I think I got it. Queen takes bishop, king has to take queen. Night takes pawn putting king in double check, then you move knight over to h6 for checkmate. Took me a while to spot it.

No. I used to play online chess a lot but dropped it more than a decade ago when too many people were using programs to play.
I haven't played a live match in quite a while.

When it comes to chess I do it the right way. LG is right there is a big problem with cheaters out there and I never understood what fun it would be to load up a computer and watch it beat your opponent for you.

Yeah that was always a mystery to me, what the satisfaction was. I was a decent player once upon a time and could respect when someone whipped my ass. But no respect for that.
I quit playing most online games around then, at one time I used to play a lot of pinochle too but the same crap only there it was people IMing each other their hands. The bids were too obvious.....
I'll poke around Chess.com and maybe join later today.

Playing the shorter time controls pretty much eliminates the cheating.
I've had a few longer time control games adjusted after the fact because chess.com determined my opponent was cheating.

The other thang that really pisses me off is when the opponent abandones the game. Chess.com will call the game after a minute and award you the victory but for some reason some times I have to wait until the clock expires for the win.

Took me a while. I kept thinking the first move had to be queen to d6. Where do you get these puzzles from?

The Sharp Game
The unpredictable champion Magnus Carlsen and a YouTube-trained, Twitch-streaming generation of young fans has revived one of our oldest games. Is the next great chess boom here?
But for much of that history and still to this day, chess has been on the margins of American culture. Unlike some countries that have made chess a part of every child’s education, or supported chess players the way we support artists or athletes, or even used international chess competitions as a source of national pride, Americans treat chess as a mild curiosity. Outside of the bright and shining moment when Bobby Fischer won the World Chess Championship in 1972, chess has hardly mattered to Americans. And even Fischer decided chess didn’t matter much to him, either. He never defended his title after winning it, and walked away from the game soon after, disappearing from public life. The chess faithful among us have waited patiently for the flame he ignited in the United States to rekindle itself ever since.

I thought for sure this thread bump had to do with the Magnus Carlsen and Anal Beads story.

Re: The Chess Thread
Only on this board could a Chess Thread be turning into horny posting -
One theory doing the rounds on the internet, popularised by Elon Musk, is that Niemann used vibrating anal beads to help him. Another suggestion was that he may have somehow been leaked Carlsen’s opening preparation. Both are denied by Niemann. But others have suggested the American, who says he spends 10-12 hours a day on chess, may have simply been the better player on the day.
Re: The Chess Thread
I haven't given up yet but not sure I can find mate in 2. The good news is I can comfortably get mate in 3 moves. I looked at your answer and think your solution has some errors in it. If queen takes bishop king take the white bishop at C4.

Damm! Mixed up in my head what the pawn on B5 protects.
As I said, I'm not as good as I would like to be at chess which is why I keep trying to do these puzzles.
edit - new solution
- 2 move mate, almost:
Kg1, f7 or a6
Qf7#
or
Kg1, Bd2
Qd2#
Damm!
Kg1, Bb2
Qb2, f2 or a6
Qf2#
is three moves
Double Damm, it all falls apart if it goes Kg1, Kd4 ...

I can find mate in the two that involve cooperation from the opponent but I’m about to give up. Going to load this one int the chess engine to find the solution. Puzzles are great and you are doing the right thing and I think finding mate in three is adequate.

That is where I am sort of at if the opponent isn't fighting to make the moves to keep going ...
If you publish a generated solution please do it as a spoiler, I am not giving up yet.

I solved it. Funny thing was I had the first move but missed one of the second moves. Set up an actual physical chess board and was able to solve it. I’ll post the solution tomorrow when I’m on desktop.

Re: The Chess Thread
So here's my thoughts chess puzzles will do wonders for your games but there are some puzzles like this one where the solution is something quirky/unusual. Finding mate in 2 in this situation is just showing you can pull off some razzle dazzle in a game... IMO if you can quickly spot mate in 3 you are doing just fine to find the mate in 2 would probably take me more time to analyze the board and make the right moves.
Second, I recommend setting up an actual board to find the solution. I had to physically move the white and black pieces to find the the mate I was missing.
- My Solution:
Move Queen to A5
A run down of possible moves by Black and moves to mate:
Black moves pawn a7 to a6 Queen takes b6 check mate
Black takes queen with pawn move bishop c5 check mate
Black moves bishop to a3, b2 or d2 move white queen to d2 check mate
Now for all the possible moves the black king can move
King to D4 queen to C3 check mate
King to F2 knight to G4 check mate (this the move I missed and didn't see it until I set up the board)
I think that's it hollar if you have any questions.
