Michigan State basketball part of 16 teams in 2017 Phil Knight Invitational

Michigan State basketball part of 2017 Phil Knight Invitational

The 16-team event will be held Thanksgiving weekend — from Nov. 23-26, 2017 — in Portland, Ore.

The Phil Knight Invitation is finally a reality.

Four years after Michigan State athletic director Mark Hollis became a driving force to create an 80th birthday celebration for the co-founder of Nike, many of the details for the 16-team basketball extravaganza were released Wednesday.

The event will be held Thanksgiving weekend — from Nov. 23-26, 2017 — in Portland, Ore. Games will be played at Rose Quarter’s Moda Center and Veterans Memorial Coliseum, and the tournament is being staged by ESPN Events.

It is being billed as one of the top tournaments in college hoops history, with the Spartans joining a host of other high-profile Nike schools in the two eight-team brackets. The others are Arkansas, Butler, Connecticut, Duke, Florida, Georgetown, Gonzaga, North Carolina, Ohio State, Oklahoma, Oregon, Portland, Portland State, Stanford and Texas.

Are the brackets or schedule set?

I assume us and OSU will be in opposite sides. Hopefully we don't get Portland or Portland State.

I know we get Duke in the Legends Classic.

That article is trash. Why is it likely that Ben Carter will never see the floor as a Spartan? Also, zero mention of Elliott, who is far more likely to be on the team than McCoy or Bowen.

Xavier Tillman (msu commit for you dummies and runner up in Mr BBall) GR CC vs Isiah Livers (scuM commit and mrBBall commit) is on https://portal.stretchinternet.com/msr/portal.htm?eventId=355780&streamType=audio

Games at Don's fieldhouse and I think winner goes to Brez

Tillman is kicking ass with 9 points, 2 bounds and 3 blocks in the 1q (Livers 2 pts and 0 bounds)

I am going with a 40% chance of Bridges staying. I know it isn't "smart" but I don't think he really wants to go. Sure an actuary can calculate the financial risk but how do you estimate his future happiness (which is what really matters)

The best shooter among this group of big men is Michigan State commit Jaren Jackson Jr., the son of former NBA player Jaren Jackson, a 12-year veteran who won a championship with the Spurs in 1999. The older Jackson was a 6-foot-4 shooting specialist; his son is listed at 6-foot-11 and 225 pounds. But the younger Jackson kept a lot of his dad’s game. In 16 games on the Nike EYBL circuit last summer, the highest level of AAU basketball, he shot 28-of-64 (43.8 percent) from behind the arc and 84-of-117 (71.8 percent) from the charity stripe. Almost all of the big men in Chicago wanted to shoot 3s, but Jackson is the only one who’s shown that he can consistently do it in games.
