Looking ahead at Michigan's State basketball's 2017-18 non-conference schedule
After playing Notre Dame, the non-conference schedule will take an odd detour to league play. In 2017-18, the Big Ten will play its conference tournament one week early -- from Wednesday Feb. 28, though Sunday March 4 -- in order to host the event at Madison Square Garden. The change will lop one week off the regular season and condense the schedule.
To accommodate the change, Big Ten teams will play one home and one road conference game on the week of Dec. 2. Those matchups are to-be-announced.
While Michigan State has built its conference schedule, it's done so in-part without knowing the extent of two key early conference games. Think about it: Perhaps the Spartans land a pair or manageable games, say, Nebraska and Rutgers? Or they could be lined up against Minnesota and Northwestern for two huge games.
Either way, MSU will be capping a challenging stretch with a pair of league games, one being on the road.

Schilling, Carter progress
Izzo said last week that senior center Gavin Schilling had been "working out hard," but it will still be about a month before he can go live with the rest of his teammates after missing all of last season with a knee injury. It will likely be longer for fellow big man Ben Carter, who came to MSU as a grad transfer last year but also lost the season to a knee injury.
Izzo said Carter "is still a couple months away" from returning as he recovers from his second serious knee injury. Before the the injury he sustained during preseason workouts last year, Carter tore his ACL in January of his senior season at UNLV.

Feels like one of those things that'll be "wait and see" the entire year for Carter.

Well, I think Izzo is eating the schollie that's left, so if Carter gets hurt again or can't go we'll have 2. Also, even if he's just servicable to get on the court, it gives us 5 more big man fouls and protects big pudding some.

We needed Carter last year not this year.
I suppose Izzo owes him the chance to give it a shot

You're probably right but none of us knows what lays ahead - we may still need him.

MSU's Kenny Goins adds range in quest for more playing time
DIMONDALE, MIch. — A weight has been lifted off Kenny Goins’ shoulders.
Well, actually, off his knee.
Gone is the bulky brace the Michigan State junior wore after suffering knee injuries during his redshirt freshman season. And Goins is adding a few things in its place.
More quickness. A few pounds. And a three-point shot.
“Once you get healthy and you get to spend some time in the gym, you get to improve on areas of your game that people didn’t really get to see,” Goins said Thursday after the opening night of the Moneyball Pro-Am at Aim High Sports.
