I'm the first to admit, though, that my extensive knowledge of his catalog drops off a bit after the Tom Joad record.

Me too, but he does have a few real good songs in the past 16 years.

I'm certain they're all better than 99.9% of the garbage played on corporate-sponsored radio.xsanguine wrote:Robert J Sakimano wrote:

Radio Nowhere is one of my favorites of all time. No joke. I think that's a great song. It's contemporary pop, so it's not something you'd find on Born To Run. I could easily see it on Born In The USA, though. Easily. It has that 'edgey from an older time' feel.
Pretty sure I've ripped the song off here or there to satisfy a deadline. Great stuff.

I'd also like to add that some of Springsteen's best work was on the Eddie and the Cruisers soundtrack..

Probably draws better crowds at 8:30am on a weekday than the Boss.

I love that song, Bob.
There's only a few songs where remember the first time I heard it and this is one of those for me.

It's hard not to like a rock song played over an americana folk beat with an Irish chord progression.
It's a great formula.

Pretty cool Bob. But I think it was a set up.
Teen jumps on stage and plays one of Bruce's 12 songs with him.

though I would've preferred had they done "Centerfield" - that one always brings the house down.
(that kid did know the tune, though - pretty awesome for a someone obscure tune of Bruce's)

He also had his own pick and knew immediately where his guitar was coming from. So my skeptic meter is high.

can't argue with the fact that it was pre-planned..

it was - Bruce has gotten a lot more laid back the last handful of years - doesn't take himself quite as seriously as he once might have.DWags wrote:Robert J Sakimano wrote:

Alright Bob. I've got the Essential Bruce Springsteen 3 disc collection deal. If I wanted to really get into Bruce, what albums should I buy first? Should I go chronological, or just start with his best and work my way down?

hard to go wrong with The River, Darkness on the Edge of Town and Born to Run.. his earlier stuff is great, of course, but these three records are in my top 10 records of all time.Cameron wrote:Alright Bob. somehow I have two copies of The River on vinyl.. I'm not even sure how that happened.

Re: I honestly thought The Boss only had like 12 songs
allow it some time to sink in.. great, great records.
Born to Run, obviously, is Born to Run: a sweeping epic that was, more or less, Springsteen's last chance at making a living as a songwriter and musician. Every single song is perfect and if any other musician on the planet happen to write and record even just one of them, it would be the pinnacle of their professional career.
Darkness is, well, kinda dark. Was written during a rather tumultuous lawsuit where Bruce didn't even have the rights to the songs he himself had written and recorded. Lacks a lot of the youth, hope and optimism found in Born to Run. It's kinda like "okay, we have those folks in cars from Born to Run.. and they're looking for somewhere to go. We've promised hope, salvation and redemption.. and, as it turns out, there isn't much to be found".
Racing in the Street is one of my top 5 Bruce tunes.. the coda is perfection.
The River is kind of an odd album in that it has a handful of upbeat, bar songs like Ramrod, You Can Look, I'm a Rocker, etc - fun songs. Then you'll find some of his most dark and personal songs like The River, Stolen Car, Wreck on the Highway.. Independence Day is amazing, as is Point Blank.
give 'em all a good listen. You won't be disappointed.

You're setting the bar pretty god damn high, Bob. I don't think Roger Waters, for example, would theoretically be more proud of having written Jungleland than of having written the majority of The Wall, but who knows....
