Name the actor:
He was the radio voice of Chester Proudfoot, deputy marshall on Gunsmoke.
The radio voice of Eb, the farm hand on Green Acres.
The Mayor of Mayberry
The voice of Ernie Keebler in the cookie commercials.

Hundreds and hundreds of acting credits with a very distinctive voice.

Mayor Stoner.. I don't know his real name. I don't do well with character names. I'm more of a story-driven Andy Griffith Show guy.

he was in a few good episodes, though - the one where the governor comes to shake Barney's hand and Barney's tanked 'cause Otis poured his liquor into the water cooler.

They also had the other mayor on the show - Mayor Pike -an older, more gentle guy. Mayor Stoner kind of had a bit of a smarmy attitude toward Andy and Barney.

top 5 favorite episodes??

Parley Baer.   I'm actually a big fan of the 60s & 70s character actors that appeared over and over in supporting roles.

People like Royal Dano, Ben Johnson, Allan Melvin, John Dehner, Karl Swenson, Pat Hingle, Simon Oakland and many others that never were "stars" but you would recognize immediately if you saw them.

I actually watch Gunsmoke by choice and the Andy Griffith show is on before and after so I end up catching some episodes.   To be truthful it's grown on me the last few months more than any time I've seen it over the years.

But some of my favorite Eps - Aunt Bea the Warden - Man in a hurry - The Pickle Story - Citizen's Arrest - The Bank Job
I'll admit I had to go to a wiki list of episodes to get the titles for those.   I'm not a fan of the Earnest T Bass episodes at all
though it seems many people are.

growing up in North Carolina, watching The Andy Griffith Show is kinda like breathing. I still watch it somewhat regularly - it's on a couple of different channels right around 7:00, 7:30.

I found Earnest T somewhat funny but overall kind of annoying. My favorite recurring characters were always the Darlings (played mostly by a bluegrass band called "The Dillards" with the except of Briscoe Darling).

there was the Mountain Wedding episode where Ernest T and the Darlings appeared together.

You realize there was only one episode that Goober and Gomer were in together?

I always divide the show up into two categories: the funny ones and the ones with more of a life lesson. As far as the funnier ones go, Barney's First Car is my favorite.. also like the women escaped convicts, as I mentioned. Barney and the Choir is a classic. The Bank Job is a good one, too.

as for the more sentimental ones, Opie the Birdman..... Shocked - my wife can't even watch that one. When Andy opens the window and tells Opie to sit there and listen to the birds "chirpin' for their mamma that's never coming home"... Shocked

Man in a Hurry is great, too - "men are orbiting the Earth.. and the whole town stops so two women can talk about their feet falling asleep"..."I wonder what causes that" -

It's on TVLand in the morning and in the late afternoon/early evening.

And George Lindsey made his living playing Goober the rest of his life - 1st on the show then on Hee Haw.

And you're right that there's a divide there between funny/lesson - though many sitcoms are like that, especially All in the Family.

And the woman that sold Barney his 1st car?   Ellen Corby AKA Grandma Walton. And one of her accomplices is one of the character actors from above. Allen Melvin.

yeah - he played a lot of different characters on the show... Mrs. Lesch's accomplice on Barney's First Car, he played the guy who got mad at Barney when Barn gave him a ticket.. and told him he was gonna rough him up when he was out of uniform - so Barney never took his uniform off - , and he was the sergeant when Ernest T tried to join the Army.

also, Barney's Sidecar is another classic episode.

And:

Steve Henshaw on the Phil Silvers Show
Sgt Hacker on Gomer Pyle USMC
He was Alice's BF on The Brady Bunch
Archie's pal Barney on All in the Family and Archie Bunker's Place

Those were his recurring roles among his many appearances.

Also....
The voice of Sgt Snorkle on Beetle Bailey
The voice of Magilla Gorilla

A great career and yet 99.99% of America wouldn't know him from Boo.

1. What's Andy's middle name?

2. Barney was referred to a couple of times with different middle initials. What were they?

No idea on either.

Though I do seem to recall J being used. Barney J Fife?

Andy's middle name is "Jackson" - Andrew Jackson Taylor. I remember that because of the high school reunion episode, he and Barney are looking at their old yearbook and they show Andy's picture with his full name.

There are a couple of episodes where Barney (or someone else) refers to Bernard P Fife.. and there is another episode where he's referred to as Bernard Milton Fife.

kinda funny and I guess the writers just assumed nobody would notice.

and I found this on Wikipedia just now:

In the episode "Class Reunion", Barney's middle name is Milton, though at other times he is called "Bernard P. Fife". In another episode, where he believes he is the descendant of Nathan Tibbs, a Mayberry Revolutionary hero, he says his name is "Barney 'Tibbs' Fife".

man, if I could somehow roll my Andy Griffith trivia in with my excitement about indie rock/folk/country music, I could possibly make something out of myself in life.

dude, I was watching it, as well. With a sleeping cat laying on me.

"this bank does not have any effective counter-measures in the event of a 10-12"..

"well.."?!?!

"Glenn Ford"!!!

I think I then worked on whippin' up some dinner.. came back for the end of Man in a Hurry, then the episode where Luke Comstock comes back to visit Andy. I remember that episode kinda freakin' me out a little when I was a kid. The director did a good job creating a lot of suspense. Not really showing Luke's face most of the episode, yet showing his limp, the sounds of him walking.. and getting off of the bus carrying the shotgun.

it's also has some of the funnier scenes with Barney deputizing Otis and Gomer -

then The Loaded Goat episode came on.

5:30 today on TVLand - the real tearjerker of the series.

Opie the Birdman
This episode has been voted #2 of the top 10 fan favorite episodes.
TV Guide named this episode as one of the greatest episodes of all time.

reviews to give you an idea....
That’s what makes the scene of Opie realizing he’s killed a bird so painful to watch. The moment where he tosses the dead creature into the air? Just devastating.

Hope I did all the right things,” Opie tells the first bird he releases. “Please fly away.” I may encounter a thousand depictions of parenthood in my lifetime, but surely none will be as simply poignant and perfectly accurate as this.

not overly familiar with it. I have a hard time sitting still so "binge watching" is kind of difficult for me.

though my family and I did binge-watch about 5 seasons of Shameless two winter breaks ago - good show.

It's one of about 30 Alaskan based reality shows (tax breaks) but it's not as staged as most of them. Follows the last 5-7 families allowed to live in the ANWR. Once they die it's over, no more people allowed to live there.

caught the "Education of Ernest T Bass" the other night.. even though we've established that Ernest T isn't our favorite character, that's a pretty good episode..
