Those who gave the ultimate sacrifice to preserve our freedom to be complete jackasses.

I've been to way too many military funerals. They are the worst. 9 years ago today I lost my dad. He was in Vietnam, and was still active duty the day he died. It hasn't even been a year yet since my brother passed too. All of my brothers were in the military, all my grandfathers, and most of my uncles. I have several friends who are overseas serving right now, I think of them often and miss them so much. Those of you that have me on facebook can see my post, but hug someone in service if you can, because not all of us can do that today.

That photo is from the American military cemetery in Normandy. It is located right above Omaha beach. If you ever have the chance you should visit.

I never served.  My oldest brother did two tours in 'Nam (chopper gunner) and was set for a third until my Mom went ape $hit and drove us to Washington DC where we met our representative Charles Chamberlain.  She told him to get her son out of Vietnam, said that he had done enough!  Chamberlain got him reassigned.  My brother was never hurt in 'Nam.  His second week as an MP in Thailand, a guy cut the hell out of him with a beer bottle during an arrest.  Geez.  My other brother's number never came up, but he always told me he was one way to Canada if it did.  Gutless little crap, but I understand.

I can't thank you guys and girls enough who served.  I don't give a rip what your assignment was or who the president was.  You all served and you did your duty as citizens.  Thank you.

In memory of LTJG Walter O. Estes, Jr., a RIO shot down with his pilot southwest of Haiphong, North Vietnam, on 11/19/67. Both were immediately captured, and Walt died in captivity. His remains were returned in 1977. His mom was a teacher of mine, and I wore a POW-MIA brace lot with his name on it for several years.

The pilot, Claude D. Clower, was a POW for five years until being turned over to the U.S. Clower died in 2010 in his home state of Texas.

RIP to both, and to all of the others who have sacrificed something -- or everything -- in fighting for our country.

Re: On Memorial Day - Please Take A Moment To Remember

Post by pulling69 on Mon 26 May 2014 - 18:28

This just happened a few days ago:

Honoring MA2 Mark Mayo's Sacrifice

For heroism while serving at Naval Station Norfolk Security Detachment, Norfolk, Virginia on 24 March 2014. While performing his duties as Chief of the Guard, Petty Officer Mayo was alerted to a suspicious individual walking towards USS MAHAN (DDG 72) on Pier 1, Naval Station Norfolk. Petty Officer Mayo pursued the individual up the brow of the ship while both he and the Quarterdeck watch-standers directed the individual to stop and provide identification. Failing to comply, the individual approached the Quarterdeck, attacked and disarmed the Petty Officer of the Watch. After boarding the ship, Petty Officer Mayo realized that the Petty Officer of the Watch no longer had control of her weapon. With complete and total disregard for his own personal safety, Petty Officer Mayo immediately placed himself between the Petty Officer of the Watch and the assailant. While fearlessly engaging the assailant and shielding the Petty Officer of the Watch, Petty Officer Mayo was fatally wounded. His exceptionally brave actions saved the lives of four watch-standers and ensured the safety of the entire crew of USS MAHAN (DDG 72). By his courageous and prompt actions in the face of great personal risk, Petty Officer Mayo prevented the loss of lives, thereby reflecting great credit upon himself and upholding the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.

Look Limey - you thank me on Veterans Day.  I served in the peacetime Navy where the biggest threat to my life I faced was a particularly virulent form of gonhorrea obtained in South Korea.  Today is to thank and remember those who gave the ultimate sacrifice so that both our countries could remain free.

The day I visited Arlington was the day I fully understood what military personnel give. I was 12, and I will cherish that trip for the rest of my life. Just a few weeks ago I took a trip to the military cemetery here in San Diego. Same reaction. Just incredible.

My last visit to Arlington and my daughters first was when the DC quake hit. Wall in the Lee house fell as we were walking in. Something we will never forget. We had just saw changing of the guard.

The changing of the guard got me.  I think that is the strongest symbol of our American military out of anything.  A soldier...nobody knows who...passed.  Instead of simply burying him and forgetting about it, a current soldier always keeps watch.  The watchman is his family for the hours he is out there.  But moreover, the military is forever his family.  It's so moving.

I've been there, too. I was far too young to appreciate it for what it is. The one thing I do remember, though, is how she still 'bleeds'. So many years later and the wound is still real and open. Again, incredible.

On the way out we went the National Cemetary of the Pacific.  For me as someone who has next to no family ties in the military (my old man was barely too log for Nam, my grandpa and great grandpa just missing The World Wars) it is unreal to read story after story after story of the heroics that happened there, in so many cases by kids.

Take a moment then watch a good war movie:

AMC has Midway at 10am and the Saving Private Ryan at 1pm.

TCM has a nice lineup of Operation Crossbow @ 9:45am - Kelly's Heroes @ Noon - Where Eagles Dare @ 2:30 and The Dirty Dozen @ 5:15 followed by an entire night WWII fare.

Weather's great up here but if it's crappy where you are there's some fine viewing.

Set the DVR for Saving Private Ryan. Started down the Band of Bros wormhole last night

The History Channel has an American Pickers marathon on Rolling Eyes

The best way to honor fallen veterans is to demand that Congress become accountable for their deaths. I urge you to contact your congresspersons and tell them that The President cannot wage war in the name of the American people without justifying it and getting authorization by vote from Congress. It is the law under The Constitution and further defined in the War Powers Act and it is being violated every day. For Congress to allow any president to wage war without congressional approval is cowardice, plain and simple.
