2016 Football Thread

I hope so, seems like he has trouble putting on weight so far. Hopefully he can get up over 300 for next year.

Between Chewins, Finley, Lukusa, both Allens and Higby, thats a big upgrade in talent over this years line.

The DL is stacked with young talent too. If both lines get a lot better, MSU should be vastly improved. I think the young WRs, Holmes/Scott and Lewerke are a talented group of skill guys. LBers whould be good.

Secondary will be the issue, although a ton of guys with experience come back (which could be good or bad.)Nicholson and Copeland have been plain bad this year. Lyke or Vance stepping up at safety would be nice, both were highly touted.

Wags, if you were the HC and I was your DC and I said "we knew what was coming, we just couldn't defend it," how would you feel about that?

Like I got a punch in the stomach. I'd be pissed, but I don't know I could fire or demote people at this point. In that article Tressel says the "these are our kids, we recruited them and it's who we have". That tells me the staff knows there is a huge talent issue. We're fucked.

True, but even with a talent issue you could say "we're just going to play Cover 2, force offenses to go on 13 play drives, and hope they occasionally shoot themselves in the dick."
Nothing about their playcalling this season has suggested to me that they think we have a talent issue. Although I suppose it could be argued that they are just now coming to this realization.

I don't know they knew it before Wisconsin. And we all thought the kid was hit as hell against us. I think they believed they had more talent than BYU and IU and now I think it's finally hitting them. I always thought we'd go cover two vs osu and Michigan but it's going to be a slow death watching 2nd and five 3rd and one than a first down. It's going to be ugly either way. If you switch up our defense we're announcing to the world we have a severe talent problem. Here's my other concern will our corners be smart enough to jam WR's and watch #2? Then stay with him if two goes vertical or release if 2 goes flat? I see us getting run off and them hitting #2 in the flats constantly for big gains. If it's Peppers in open space, hahahaha.

I don't know. Is Riley athletic enough to go Tampa 2 at least against osu? I see a lot of "we're fucked" sandwiches in our future.

Yeah it doesnt seem like a talent issue, both schemes on offense and defense seem fucked.

If the players feel the coaches are letting them down, you start to see effort and focus fails. And MSU has been seeing a lot of those.

So, for the UM game...MSU needs to start Lewerke and run spread, shotgun formations 90% of the time. If you try to run basic pro style stuff and run the ball, why even play the game?

I know the offensive coaching staff was fucked when last year they had a month to plan for Bama, and still thought the bullshit pro style, power and run strategy was viable against Bamas defense. Mind boggling the inability to adapt.

Issues galore. Hopefully the staff can figure out a way to slow the game down and keep us competitive.
I'm reminded of a clinic speech I saw with Jim Tressel while he was at Youngstown where he said something to the effect of "we won the National Championship and the the worst thing we did was carry over all the stuff we were doing to the next year. We lost 16 Seniors and had a lot of new first time starters. We tried to pick up where we left off and that was wrong. We owed it to those kids to start over and we didn't do that."
I think we needed to recognize that this was a new group with new kids and simplify, we didn't do that.

Man, I'd love to see Finnley play. We desperately need him. What is his weight up to? He needs to get back in to tht game weight and get confident. Hope he's not gun shy.

Nah, that was tongue in cheek. But Nigel, you know.. I know.. it's pretty worthless to throw TOC out there when he doesn't really give us a better chance of winning so let's not get into the 20 questions eh?

I mean, the first thing with pea soup is the texture, okay?
I've had watery pea soup, it's AWFUL.
Uh, I've had gelatinous, thick pea soup, it's TERRIBLE.
Pea soup, much like clam chowder, needs to have that consistency first, that you can stand the spoon up in it, but the spoon soon tilts, that's the consistency you want.
Number two: Uh, pea soup on it's own can be a little bland. It wants, uh, a fairly aggressive peppering and salting.
Number three: Pea soup needs a fine dice of ham. Not bacon, not any other meat, not turkey. It needs a fine dice of ham.
Uh, number four: Uh, pea soup scorches easily. You don't wanna heat it on a high heat. You wanna heat it on medium low, just until it's warmed through.
Uh, number five: Pea soup is best made, uh, by hand, not out of a Campbell's can. And the key to pea soup, you want a ham bone, uh, for the stock you make, uh, to, to boil your peas.

Where's the follow up question on expecting Geiger to run 35 yards after he says this

“Or scrambling when it’s fourth-and-16 – you’re going to have to throw the ball down the field. … Those things are going to come as he gets more and more experience, but I do think that he made some plays out there.”

Outside of that, solid article
