Check out the view! MSU's new $157 million complex takes shape

1855 Place 636307957930534153-1855place1

EAST LANSING - The latest addition to Michigan State University's campus is taking shape on a former parking lot across the street from the home of Spartan basketball.

1855 Place — named for the year of MSU's founding — is its answer to students' desire for apartment-style housing.

The 10 buildings in the complex will ultimately hold more than 420 new student housing units, ranging from studio apartments to townhouses.

The largest building in 1855 Place is a four-story, 102,000-square-foot, mixed-use building that'll house staff from Residential Hospitality Services and the MSU Athletics Department.

Planted near the corner of Kalamazoo and Harrison, its eastward-facing windows give a sprawling view of campus, including the Breslin Student Events Center and Spartan Stadium.

$785/month per student for a 4 bedroom. Shocked Our entire apartment didn't cost that much (like $600) and that was split between 3 guys. It was 20 years ago I guess.

LOL. I went to school for a bit under 7 grand a year. I'm now writing checks for 27K a year. Our apartments shared a bathroom and our dorm and food were blah. These apartments, have a common kitchen and living room, four seperate rooms each with their own study room and bathroom.

Cafe's are incredible. and they won't stop improving.

I could make about 2/3rds of the money needed for college in the summer. I told my daughter if she gets a job making 18K this summer, quit school. Keep the job.

Shit has to stop.

It's just a different (and nicer) option, and probably a much needed one. Kids can still live in traditional dorms with food plans.

Went for the dorm to a house two blocks behind Dooleys with six other guys.  Everybody got their own bedroom for $125.00 a month. The best thing was that we were the first students to ever live in that house, meaning it wasn't trashed when we moved in.

Granted, that was almost 40 years ago.

I left school with about 21k in debt. If I went today I'd probably leave with about 80 - 90k in debt. As much as I loved going to MSU no way I'd go there today.

So freshman can live in these or just new apartments? 785 is insane for a four bedroom. A lot of Asians in range rovers will be moving in though that's for sure.

Can't quite recall how much the dorm was in the late 70's...does $700 a term sound right?  Of course, it was trimesters back then.

Yep, 10 weeks at a time. I recall the dorms being close to $1000 but even then a helluva deal. Room, utilities and 3 squares a day (except Sunday) for $100 a week.

Yeah, that figure is probably right.  R&B costed more than tuition.

MSU tuition:  Last number I can recall before graduating was $32.50 per credit hour

Thought about doing it more than once as I was staying at Kellogg this year about ten weekends and the kids apartment complex was a quarter mile west of Brody. But the road house serves alcohol. No real choice.

Didn't do much with the room freshman year but took notice of some poorly designed and constructed lofts. Planned for sophomore year over the summer. Did some cool shit with the room. Put the desks and bunk bed supports in storage. Only university supplied furniture we kept were the bed spring frames, mattresses, and couch/pullout. Wasn't exactly a loft but built a structure that hung the bed frames from the ceiling on each side of room. Very open design.

Built a nice looking bar that summer that also served as a desk. Designed it so it could be broken down quickly and be easy to move.

No social media back then except newspaper. That room would have easily been in the top 10 on campus.

Unsolicited advice: It may feel good to say fuck it and walk out, but try not to burn bridges. That's a job on your resume, at least early in your career.

Agree with this. As a former administrator to maybe a future one do you want some superintendent calling up and getting a guy you told to fuck off on the phone? Unless you don't list it. But even if you list it on your first couple jobs it could come back to haunt you. Best to take a deep breath and thank them and walk away. I know, that's hard sometimes

Only job I ever got fired from was DTN. My roommate and I signed up to be the onsite Resident Managers at our apartment complex where there was no office. We did this so I could keep my 110 lb dog without getting busted. Well, we got busted anyone, and an eviction notice, and fired.

You're right, I'm gonna stick it out. Frustrating at times though. A certain manager and I butt heads pretty often

As far as our hours, we're open 7-11 for breakfast ($5.99), 11-2 for lunch ($9.99), 2-5 is still full price but only pizza, sandwiches, salad bar, and desserts are open. Dinner is 5-8, and after 8pm it's the same limited menu as 2-5pm, until midnight during the school year and until 10pm in the summer.

I work 9am til close during the summer for 3 days. 4 day weekends are nice for traveling. Got some sweet trips planned.

This Friday though, they're giving us overtime so I picked up a cashier shift from 3-8

So if I came in at 11:01 and ate breakfast could I stay in there read my phone do paperwork till 1:59 and eat lunch/dinner? Or do I pay the ten bucks every time I take my tray up?

Also, how many people hand you a ten and wait for the penny?

Ah. I wouldn't recommend it, it's all shit. But we have dough that we buy and we have to put the sauce/cheese/toppings on those fuckers in the morning and then we just send em through the oven as needed

My absolute favorite were the square lamb patties with mashed potatoes and gravy. Once bit into a shotgun BB that probably helped kill the poor critter. Spit it out and kept eating.

Thoughts of the Wilson cafeteria square lamb patty dinner still make me salivate sometimes

No, I mean literally. Do they get frozen shit from Sysco? Do you have legit pizza ovens and the dough is just from Sysco?

Ah. I wouldn't recommend it, it's all shit. But we have dough that we buy and we have to put the sauce/cheese/toppings on those fuckers in the morning and then we just send em through the oven as needed

Dirty little secret: pretty much all food you get from any restaurant where you're not paying at least $20 per entree (and that's probably low) is "shit" by normal standards if you were to cook it for yourself in your own home. That's the only way food-service is profitable.

It's mostly frozen stuff that's reheated. Well established. No issue with that, though if it tastes good.
