I don't watch MMA, but I don't know that I agree with you. First of all, there's plenty wrong with America that isn't at all symbolized by MMA. Secondly, martial arts competitions have a long history in virtually every culture, so just because it's not your cup of tea (or mine) doesn't necessarily mean that anyone who enjoys watching or participating is a cretin (though cretins do tend to enjoy it, I'll give you that).

Most incidents of spousal and women's abuse percentage wis among all professional sports. Many are serving prison terms. Hbo's inside sports did a fascinating piece on it. I've never watched a match. Not my thing but I don't begrudge anyone from making a living.

Outside the ring many are making their ring names seem tame.

Naw. What happened was that boxing went PPV which opened the door. Boxer vs. wrestler has been around forever. So why not up the ante. The most American thing about it to me was the entrepreneurship of Dana White recognizing the void.

I'm not a big MMA fan, but when I watch, I respect the skill. Gladiators existed before the USA, and will continue to exist potentially after the USA. It's not an American concept.
