So how much longer will the Big 12 be a power conference?

Ultimately, though, the Big 12’s chances of long-term survival are slim sans expansion. In 10 years, the Big 12’s so-called “ironclad” granting of TV rights agreements will be up -- about the same time the College Football Playoff contract will be up, too. The closer those granting of rights contracts come to ending (assuming they’re even as ironclad as some suggest) the easier they will be to negotiate out of. Such a climate will make the landscape ripe for another seismic conference realignment shift, at which point other commissioners will be circling Big 12 programs like a shiver of sharks, just waiting to pick schools off to form their inevitable superconferences.

Today, the Big 12’s expansion options don’t look so hot. But five years from now, who knows?  Colorado State is building a $200 million stadium. Memphis will soon be adding new football and basketball facilities. Houston hired one of the budding stars in coaching in Tom Herman.

The Big 12 wants to expand, and ESPN thinks options for them can include Colorado State, Memphis, and Houston. Seriously? I know the bottom is bad in a lot of conferences, but that would be ridiculous.

What will it take for Texas and/or OU to leave and finally kill that conference?

I don't see it breaking up any time soon.

I doubt Texas wants to go anywhere as they could and should be dominating that conference

I know it's an unpopular choice, but I would love having Texas in the B1G.

I am hoping the Big Ten adds University of Findlay so Schilling can go back and kiss the middle of their basketball court.

But they aren't. And traditionally horrible programs like Baylor and TCU are doing well while Texas sucks. Plus their Longhorn Network is a disaster. I just wonder how long they'll put up with all of it before they say enough is enough and try to join the Pac-12 or B1G.

Findlay Prep isn't the same thing as the University of Findlay.

Big 12 needs to be the first at 16. Add the schools mentioned plus air force, BYU, and Boise. Bottom line they need a competitive conf title game to be taken seriously

I don't see how adding a bunch of reject schools makes the conference more respectable.

1. Fuck Texas. They're worst than Michigan in terms of arrogance.
2. Big XII will expand because ESPN wants them too.
3. Best candidates are BYU, Cincinnati or Houston.

BYU: Accommodations have to be made for the no games on Sunday for BYU (which really can screw up the non-revenue sports - think track meets and tournaments).

Houston it's either them SMU or Rice in getting the Southwest Conference band back together.

Cincinnati give West Virginia a running mate out East. Because they are 1000 miles from their nearest Conference rival right now.

On the Big Ten side I would really like us to add North Carolina and Virginia. That can't happen realistically until 2027 when the ACC deal is up.

Indeed, the Big Ten, SEC and Pac-12 would all take Oklahoma in a heartbeat, but the existence of Oklahoma State could limit the options of the Sooners. Note that the Pac-12 turned down an expansion proposal from Oklahoma and Oklahoma State in the chaotic days following Texas A&M’s announcement that it was leaving the Big 12 for the SEC, which means that the Pac-12 did NOT reject Oklahoma as an individual expansion candidate. If Oklahoma and Kansas were making that expansion proposal instead, then they would almost assuredly be Pac-12 members today.

Regardless, David Boren is pretty directly stating that Oklahoma isn’t that happy with where the Big 12 is today. Whether OU has any leverage to do anything about it depends upon whether it can act alone (in which case it has all of the options in the world with the Big Ten, SEC and Pac-12) or needs to do everything in tandem with Oklahoma State (where the only option might be to grit their teeth and stay in the Big 12).

I think that, if they want to expand, the B12 should add Cincy and Memphis. 

They could die, though, and that will leave Texas and Oklahoma open to the B1G, SEC, and Pac-12...though I wouldn't want to touch Texas because they've ruined every conference they've been in.

I don't think that ND is getting into the B1G anymore, unless they come begging. I can't see UNC leaving the ACC, unless something drastic happens, no way would UNC and Duke want to be in separate conferences. UVA, maybe.

The Big 12 has an issue, because who wants to join? Smaller schools in Texas? Then the other members feel that the state of Texas has too much influence over the whole conference.

Texas is like ND. They make too much on their own. They wouldn't split revenue with a bunch of SEC teams.

OU gets in the CFP already.

...and OU is 0-4 in the CFP with three losses to the SEC. They are better off in the B12. I don't think they see the CFP in the SEC.

If so, the Big 12 is toast. Other members will start scrambling to join the ACC, BigTen, or ACC.

Football gets the headlines, gets 1000’s back for home games that helps grease the pump for alumni giving but men’s basketball is the revenue ace in the hole.

We Midwesterners have winter. We stay home, watch TV and millions of us watch college basketball. That’s 100’s of programming hours for the BTN plus games other networks pay big bucks for rights fees.
