Roc's Solar Eclipse Party - August 21, 2017

Post by LooseGoose on 2017-06-25, 19:42

Who's going?

I'll be there with whatever pies he'd like me to bring.

A State-by-State Guide to the Best 2017 Solar Eclipse Festivals Still Available

Haven’t made plans yet to see this August’s once-in-a-lifetime celestial event? Read on.

ON MONDAY, AUGUST 21, 2017, a total solar eclipse will darken a narrow path across the continental U.S., from Oregon to South Carolina. The eclipse’s path of totality, where the sun will be entirely obscured by the moon, is set to pass over 14 states (technically it includes a sliver of uninhabited Montana wilderness, and a teeny corner of Iowa).

During the event, the midday skies will turn to night anywhere from a few seconds to a few minutes, depending on where in the path it is viewed from. For many, this is a once-in-a-lifetime chance to experience a total solar eclipse, and just two months out, finding a good spot to view the celestial wonder is already becoming a challenge.

I mean, the first thing with pea soup is the texture, okay?
I've had watery pea soup, it's AWFUL.
Uh, I've had gelatinous, thick pea soup, it's TERRIBLE.
Pea soup, much like clam chowder, needs to have that consistency first, that you can stand the spoon up in it, but the spoon soon tilts, that's the consistency you want.
Number two: Uh, pea soup on it's own can be a little bland. It wants, uh, a fairly aggressive peppering and salting.
Number three: Pea soup needs a fine dice of ham. Not bacon, not any other meat, not turkey. It needs a fine dice of ham.
Uh, number four: Uh, pea soup scorches easily. You don't wanna heat it on a high heat. You wanna heat it on medium low, just until it's warmed through.
Uh, number five: Pea soup is best made, uh, by hand, not out of a Campbell's can. And the key to pea soup, you want a ham bone, uh, for the stock you make, uh, to, to boil your peas.

I've got a friend that lives in Maryville, Tennessee, thinking about giving him a call and going down to see him. He's right in the path. My son lives in Cannon Beach in Oregon and he's taking a couple days off to get in position to watch it. Sounds like it may be crazy out there because of the limited access.

I love looking at maps and it's crazy to think that I've driven through most of Wyoming over the past 15 years. The only place I haven't been is the North East corner.

I would go just to see if he has a collection of capes. I bet he does. He seems like the kind of guy who wears capes.

Remember the '79 eclipse while at State. Recall the afternoon being partly cloudy but getting somewhat less light.  Forget exactly but think that eclipse hit mid-Michigan at around 40%.  Even that was a little eerie. This next one will max at 83% in the Detroit area.

Just ordered a 10-pack of these for 15 bucks.  Like most prophylactics, they are cheaper in quantity.  The 50-pack is $50.

Got the eclipse specs today and tried them out. They work great.

The diameter of the sun in the high sky appears much smaller than I thought it was.

Looked back at Amazon.  The 50-pack of eclipse glasses that was $50 two weeks ago is up to $75.

Spirit Airlines offers total solar eclipse bargain fares to 3 cities in path of totality

Spirit Airlines is capitalizing on a celestial event to sell plane tickets in the lead-up to Aug. 21, the date of the first total solar eclipse to pass through the continental United States since 1979.

The airline is offering discount fares ranging from $50 to $90 round trip for customers who book tickets by 11:59 a.m. Wednesday to fly to three cities near the solar eclipse’s path of totality — Portland, Ore., Kansas City, Mo., and Myrtle Beach, S.C.
