Alas, a ride, for all its power, cannot tweet from movie theaters and restaurants. It cannot put on a Cristiano Ronaldo jersey and throw a wicked satellite camp in Madrid. It cannot bend the ear of a 4.3-cornerback one minute and the ears of power brokers at ESPN the next.

A ride won’t take off its shirt. Or climb a tree. Or roll with Michael Jordan. Or play social media the way Hendrix played a Strat.

And that’s what’s strange. Dantonio has led a program to 11 or more wins in five out of the last six years, a Sabanesque run without the Finebaum death glare. And yet he risks being cast as the right man in the right place at the wrong time, a steak coach in a sizzle division.

It says something about the state of Spartan football — and about us, and not in a good way — that one of the few major grenades most objective outsiders could lob at Dantonio these days is that he isn’t Jim Harbaugh or Urban Meyer.

Which, when you really think about it, is just silly. Monty Python, slap-a-man-in-the-face-with-a-fish kind of silly.

Why do I get the feeling that out of the three Bo would like to hang with Dantonio the most.

MSU's Mark Dantonio attends event to honor 'man of peace' Dale Harvel

When Bridgett Harvel walked into Bronco Lanes for a fundraiser in honor of her late husband Thursday night, someone was waiting for her.

Michigan State football coach Mark Dantonio had made the trip from East Lansing to Warren to pay tribute to her husband, Detroit King football coach Dale Harvel, who suffered a fatal heart attack after a 7-on-7 scrimmage last Friday.

Because his MSU players will be arriving on campus Saturday, Dantonio will be unable to attend the 11 a.m. funeral at the Second Ebenezer Baptist Church. But he wanted to pay his respects to a man he has known for 25 years, dating to his days as an assistant coach at Kansas.

King was a regular recruiting stop for Dantonio while at Kansas, Ohio State and Cincinnati, and nothing has changed as the head coach at MSU. He always looked forward to seeing his friend.

“It was just him welcoming you into the school and making you a part of it,” Dantonio said. “This is a tragic loss.”

The two became friends when Harvel was Jim Reynolds’ defensive coordinator for 23 years. Harvel became head coach seven years ago.

Most people would argue SS is one of the worst experiences. Trying to walk around before gametime and you are jammed shoulder to shoulder, and the vending/bathroom experience is god awful.

Ive been to every MSU/UM game at the big house since 2004 and have never felt more or less 'packed in' when in the seats than SS.

But I know, its an unpopular narrative with MSU fans.

Have you ever spoke to away fans that have gone to games at SS? None of them are good reviews. The food vending and bathroom situation are freaking terrible at MSU. Thats just a fact.
