lol, oh. Yeah I actually had someone tell me that MSU won because we had better players than they did. About made me spit my coffee on the screen after hearing all of the great 'crootin victories of the past decade.

Re: The Athletic website
Old Tom Izzo and the hunt for one more title
At the program's annual media day, the Hall of Fame coach didn't bother much to quell expectations for his preseason top-three team. It would've been useless. The Spartans are loaded and everyone knows it. Had Izzo gotten up there and rolled out his trusty self-depreciating bit, it would've rang hollow, or worse, disingenuous.
Instead, Izzo acknowledged the expectations and said it was the team's job to meet them. For one of the perennial powerhouses in college basketball, this is well-traveled territory
Still, this season feels different. While Izzo is probably no closer to retiring than he was ten years ago, simple math says that his chances of winning a second national title grow smaller as every year passes. The hands of time remain undefeated. That reality, coupled with how good, how big and how deep this year's Michigan State team is, means that 2017-18 is no ordinary year.
If Izzo is ever going to win another title, this probably needs to be the year.
Everything is in place. Miles Bridges, defying logic, bypassed the NBA to return to school. He might be the best college basketball player in America. His fellow sophomores — Joshua Langford, Nick Ward and Cassius Winston — are all capable of being All-Big Ten players. There's a five-star freshman, Jaren Jackson Jr., who gets to serve as a role player. There are two leaders, Tum Tum Nairn and Gavin Schilling, who started on MSU's 2015 Final Four team and will now be key reserves for this team. There are veteran wings off the bench — Matt McQuaid and Kyle Ahrens. There's a troth of frontcourt depth — Xavier Tillman, Ben Carter and Kenny Goins.

10 preseason thoughts on Michigan State and its national title hopes
This year should be vastly different. Izzo's group might have more size and depth than any team in the country. If fully healthy, MSU has 10 players who've combined for 609 games played and 3,006 points. Jackson and Tillman are added on top of that.
The rotation combinations are endless. Izzo could play a five-out lineup with Bridges at the four and Jackson at the five at one moment, then come back with a bruising frontcourt of Ward at the four and Schilling at the five on the next. The possibilities go on and on.

How to host a college basketball game in six days
Earlier this week, an otherwise normal Monday morning began like any other in East Lansing. That is, except for a certain meeting room on the Michigan State campus, where athletic director Mark Hollis met with his staff to discuss hosting a men's basketball game at Van Andel Arena in Grand Rapids. Such an undertaking, according to MSU director of events Seth Kesler, would typically take “at least 30 days” of planning, but usually “closer to three months.”
In this instance, they had six.
Six days.
This Sunday, at approximately 2 p.m., a referee, one who was not assigned by the Big Ten until late Wednesday night, will toss a ball up for the opening tip-off. And in front of roughly 11,000 people, those who sold out the building in just two days, the Spartans will play Georgia in an entirely unexpected, uncommon event.
Over the next two hours, the game will come and go. The real story, though, is how it came to be.

Re: The Athletic website
The dollars and sense of Miles Bridges comes to a defining moment vs. Duke
That sure sounds good, in theory, but there's the issue of Bridges' stock. By coming back to school, the young star put his face value up for reinterpretation. This matchup with Duke will start pushing that number in one way or another.
Approximately 75 NBA team personnel are credentialed for tonight, according to basketball insider Adam Zagoria. They'll be there for Bridges, Bagley and the slew of other potential pros taking part in this double-header. Fifteen of the top 60 players in ESPN's 2018 NBA prospect rankings will be in Chicago.
