I guess I don't understand all the vitriol towards Avila. If teams are asking you to eat 30 million of the contract, why not just keep him for another year and sell him as a rental next year. You can't just dump him for nothing. This rebuild is going to take longer than a year and waiting a year to deal him isn't gonna make that much difference. He's more tradable next year with that contact. Idiots like Valenti are just talking out of their asses.
Yep, takes time to turn over a team. During the Dodgers/Giants game tonight they went over the Giants situation and it is very similar to Detroits. Lots of long expensive contracts and players past their prime that are difficult to move. SF has a great GM and like Detroit they have few cards to play.
I've said it several times, but time is really the best way out of our current situation. Just need a few of those big contracts to expire and some of our youth in AA to develop.

Tigers-Cubs deal is final: Justin Wilson and Alex Avila to Cubs for Jeimer Candelario and Isaac Paredes, and PTBNL or cash.

Like the looks of Pardes but they only get one prospect for Wilson? I mean I see one for Avila but for Wilson come on. PTBNL I guess

They will deal Ian or Iggy in the offseason and put Machado in a starting role.
They will try to deal JV, as well and give away half of his contract.
Next season looks pretty similar to right now.
C - McCann
1b - Miggy
2b - let's just say Machado
SS - Iggy
3B - Prospect acquired via trade
RF - Nick
CF - Mahtook
LF - J-Up
DH - Vic
SP1 - JV (presumably)
SP2 - Fulmer
SP3 - Norris
SP4 - Boyd
SP5 - JZ
Closer - I suppose Shane Greene
Setup is Alex Wilson

Jiminez is likely in the bullpen mix.
I wouldn't eliminate Gerber as an OF prospect.
My uninformed opinion is that the Tigers are filling up on INF prospects that can hit because they're harder to find that OFers. Or they're much more confident in the OF prospects they already have.

Watching the game last night was pretty illuminating about this years trade market. my sense is a lot of the top teams are content. The teams in the mix for the playoffs are all flawed and they feel vs the competition they have a shot to win it without buying. Solid proof it's becoming a younger game, top teams are holding onto to top prospects is where it is at unless they can give them up for a younger arm they can control for a season or two.
Regarding Verlander and Kinsler I don't see much interests for them even in the offseason.

Makes sense. I could see an off season market for Verlander in a situation where a bonafide contender is in need of replacing a veteran starter. If the Kershaw thing goes sideways or the Nationals suffer a lose in their rotation.

I'm going to guess Castellanos is 1b or DH next year. I think V Mart is either on the bench as a PH or retired.

Possible, it just seems like going forth the market will also feature SP up for grabs like Yu Darvish or Sonny Grey that make trading for a guy as old and expensive as Verlander less likely. If the Tigers are desperate they can eat a ton of his salary and probably get a light return for him. His ERA is above 4 and he's 34.
Just saw the Freep published a rumor the Astros are interested. We shall see.

Just skimmed Fenech's article. I think he's an amateur and it's just click bait. Lots of Astro's could pick up Verlander but it's unlikely.
If Astro's need a SP they should compete for Darvish or Grey.

I know the Cubs are being aggressive, but Theo Epstein took it to a new level by demanding Al Avila's first-born son in this trade.

Good lord....for once Keith Law likes a deal the Tigers made.
Law: Cubs pay a heavy prospect price in deal with Detroit
Law: Cubs pay a heavy prospect price in deal with Detroit
The return for Detroit is very strong. Jeimer Candelario was hopelessly blocked in Chicago, but he's ready for some kind of regular major-league role at this point, having hit for surprising power in Triple-A this year but is likely more of a high-contact, high-average hitter in the long run. He's been a fringy defender at third whenever I've seen him, although I've had varying reports from scouts ranging from above-average defense there to "he can't play third."
He's further away than Candelario and thus carries a good bit more risk, but I like the odds here that the Tigers acquired two everyday players for a left-handed reliever and a backup catcher.

they should just keep Verlander to the end. They are going to pay 25 million just to get rid of the guy, might as well just keep him and do up a 'farewell' tour his last season to rake in some bucks off of the nostalgia.

Re: 2017 Baseball trade deadline Meltdown thread!
Detroit Tigers' moves before trade deadline were underwhelming
Add JD into this and it's why I trust Avila more on position players and bats than pitchers.
Add JD into this and it's why I trust Avila more on position players and bats than pitchers.
Avila deserves plenty of criticism for his free-agent signings, including Jordan Zimmermann ($22 million per year), Mike Pelfrey ($8 million) and Mark Lowe ($5.5 million).
But Avila also deserves credit for not trading Justin Wilson last winter. Wilson's value increased this summer, when he moved into a closer role, and it allowed him to become one of the most sought-after lefty relievers at the trade deadline.
When you think about it, Avila actually has a stronger track record of developing players than handing out big-time contracts.
Under Avila, the Tigers found Mikie Mahtook and got him in a trade from the Tampa Bay Rays.
They found Hicks, selecting him off waivers from the Twins in April 2016.
The Tigers found Alex Presley, signing him as a free agent, and he has hit.313 in 34 games this season. They also found Jim Adduci, who had been playing in Korea, and got Daniel Stumpf from Kansas City in the 2016 Rule 5 draft.
Those are all minor deals, not superstar acquisitions in any way. But they have worked out, in varying ways.

Re: 2017 Baseball trade deadline Meltdown thread!
I could see them moving Kinsler to make room for Machado or some of the kids they just acquired.
Unfinished business: Players who could still be on the move
Unfinished business: Players who could still be on the move
Ian Kinsler, 2B, Detroit Tigers
Rest-of-Season ZiPS Projection: .266/.325/.418, 6 HR, 23 RBIs, 1.1 WAR
While Justin Verlander is the Tiger who will still be talked about the most, his contract makes it so that window shoppers aren't going to put in a claim, and I doubt that Verlander is seriously talked about in a swap in the next several weeks. Simply put, the Tigers are still at a spot where they want the new team to pick up the contract and pay handsomely for the privilege of doing so. If someone wanted to do that, the trade would've happened.
In the case of Kinsler, the Tigers know that they're not getting a huge package that's hard to pull off in August in return. And the $9 million Kinsler would receive (rest-of-season salary and the $5 million buyout) might just be enough to scare off a contender with a weaker second-base situation and an even weaker payroll like the Rays. If the Brewers start to fade a bit in the next week or two, they might want to start talking Kinsler with the Tigers as they did before the deadline, given that second base has been one of the team's weakest points this season.
