Michigan has a new Medal of Honor recipient

West Michigan man awarded Medal of Honor for Vietnam War bravery

"We honor you, we salute you, and with God as your witness, we thank you for all that you have done for us," said Trump as he awarded McCloughan, 71, of South Haven, the nation's highest military award.

McCloughan — who was a private first class when the events occurred and rose to the rank of specialist 5 before returning to Michigan to become a beloved teacher and coach — looked emotional after Trump clasped the award around his neck, saying, "Thank you," to the president. After a handshake, the two men embraced.

As a medic at the Battle of Nui Yon Hill in May 1969, McCloughan is credited with saving 10 members of his platoon, rushing back again and again onto the battlefield to save other soldiers despite his own injuries from a battle that lasted two days. Five of those he saved were in attendance, as was his family, Trump said.

"It was as if the strength and the pride of our whole nation were beating inside Jim's heart," Trump said as he described McCloughan's repeated attempts to rescue the wounded. "He just kept on going."

It was Trump's first awarding of the medal and he appeared subdued and grateful to McCloughan, who stood near him throughout the ceremony. Also attending were newly installed White House Chief of Staff John Kelly, Defense Secretary Jim Mattis and other members of the president's cabinet and staff.

I've always wondered why they have the President award the medal. Seems like the highest ranking member of that service branch should do it. A President is just an elected figure. Maybe I'm over thinking it. Congrats to a fine man of honor and bravery. Well deserved.

This is true, and the likely reason (also along with it being a bigger deal if it's the President that's honoring you--leave out the politics for a minute, the office of the President makes it a pretty big deal).

But if we want to get into the technicalities or logic of it, it should really be the Vice President and the Speaker of the House, as they're the leaders of Congress. It IS called the Congressional Medal of Honor, after all.

Guys, he was a Medal of Honor recipient. Let's keep politics out of it. Goose and I dusted up politics in the Dunkirk thread and I apologize for that. But whether you're for "peace through strength" or an objector, this man, from Michigan did things that were unreal and way above the call of duty in a war he was drafted to, not volunteered. tBin is for politics. I'll check myself, but let's respect this thread for what it was meant for: honoring someone who, in the worst of circumstances, put others before him

Sorry, it is hard to tell when Loose is doing his faux patriot passive aggressive troll shit, and when he is for real.

I think most of us political junkies have that. I really think, in this case, we should respect this man.

I don't know, I guess it's like porn, you know it when you see it.

The courage displayed by this soldier -- and few others before and since -- always leaves me in awe.

Also: West side > East side

the part I love most:

"It was as if the strength and the pride of our whole nation were beating inside Jim's heart," Trump said as he described McCloughan's repeated attempts to rescue the wounded. "He just kept on going."

I couldn't have said it better myself.

This fine American president.. who, like me, genuinely loves his country.. captured the words that were marinating deep in the heart of every American capable of comprehending such courage. We're so fortunate to have this man occupying the Oval Office and I'd also like to thank this well-deserving recipient.

I love America and it's two fine men like this that remind me of that.

I can only leave you with this:

I'm not at all surprised you're a Chip. It goes hand in hand with you being a cat person.
