UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. - Penn State stopped the Michigan State hockey team’s three-game winning streak, topping the Spartans, 7-2, on Friday night at Pegula Ice Arena. The Nittany Lions jumped on the Spartans with four first-period goals, including two in the opening 2:13.
“Our better players have to be better right from the get-go,” MSU head coach Danton Cole said. “We’re not a team that can have very many guys, if any, have off nights or feel their way through a game. You’re not going to feel your way through a game with Penn State, they’re going to come out and come at you hard. If you’re not ready, then that’s a mental issue. We have to learn a lot form that and get back on the horse tomorrow.” ........................................

It wasn’t as sweet as a victory. But it was a lot better than a heartbreaking overtime defeat.

Michigan State came within 33.6 seconds of defeating Penn State here Saturday, but had to settle for a 2-2 tie after the Nittany Lions, with their goaltender pulled for a sixth attacker, scored at 19:26 to send it into overtime.

The Spartans had to survive a Penn State power play for the final 1:43 of overtime before earning the tie in the Big Ten series finale in front of a sellout crowd of 5,824 at Pegula Ice Arena.

But MSU did skate off celebrating. The Spartans (7-6-1, 1-4-1-1) won the shootout, 2-1, to earn two points in the Big Ten standings while the Nittany Lions (8-7-1, 3-4-1-0) came away with one. Of course, in the NCAA records, the game goes down as a tie.

if he continues at this rate he'd be on the radar to get drafted but I don't think we have anyone right now that is being considered to jump unless Lewandoski stays on pace and puts up like 30 goals. He hasn't been drafted and I hope that Coles hire means GM's are okay with kids staying in college instead of them playing in the minors.

I don't think so, wasn't the SID like in his late 60s? Fcukin Sam Saliba had the shittiest 60 seconds in that 2nd period, playing dog shit lazy and we are now down 2-1 after 2

echo last nights game but it was really 1-0 till the golden domers netted an empty netter with :15 to go. I like this teams direction, I think some defensive positioning needs to be shored up but fore-checking has improved and we're a little farther along then I predicted. Hopefully we can keep things going in the right direction.

For the first time this season -- and the first in the new coaching era at both schools -- the Spartans (7-8-1, 1-6-1-1) and Wolverines (6-6-2, 2-4-2-1) collide in a Big Ten series at 7:30 p.m. Thursday in Ann Arbor and at 7 p.m. Friday at Munn Arena.
It's first time MSU's Danton Cole and U-M's Mel Pearson will be facing each other since being named head coaches of their respective schools last April.

Cole is hoping he's as successful coaching against Michigan as he was playing against them as a Spartan from 1985-89. His teams were 14-6 against the Wolverines -- 10-2 at home and 4-4 in Ann Arbor. Cole never played U-M in the Great Lakes Invitational in Detroit.
"Growing up as a MSU fan and with the rest of my family having gone here, I was deeply engrained with the competition and what the rivalry meant,'' Cole said. "When we were playing here, these were the games that we really looked forward to. The GLI was huge, so were the Michigan games and then NCAAs after that.
"Intensity was always ramped up, the emotions were ramped up. It was an awful lot of fun to play in.''
It's been 28 years since Cole played at MSU but not much has changed with the importance of the rivalry.
"It's going to be two hard-fought games. There will be some chippiness,'' Gatt said. "The atmosphere will be great and they should be great games.
"I'm excited for our freshmen to get a good taste of this. You can talk about it a lot but you really don't know what it's like until you go out and experience it.''
