Dusty Baker Good or Bad Manager?

Post by steveschneider on Fri 13 Oct - 11:17

I'm seeing the usual rounds of Dusty Baker is an idiot after a tough loss in a game that could have went either way.

14th in all time wins as a manager (ahead of Francona, Bosche, Lasorda, Weaver)

.532 win percentage

I say really good manager. Ball doesn't lie and there's a strong argument for HOF. The best argument against HOF is he hasn't won a ring.

I'd say okay. He has had some awesome teams and his postseason record isn't HOF material.

Not an idiot, but not the greatest manager the game has ever seen either.

For HOF consideration, if you give me Davey Johnson I'll give you Dusty Baker.

I agree with your take. I just think there's a mob mentality casting him off as a total buffoon. I don't think it's accurate.

A really good manager that has blown a lot of memorable teams' chances.

Should've won game 7 of the 2003 NLCS with the Cubs.

Should've won game 6 of the 2002 World Series when Russ Ortiz was dominating the Angels.

Should've won last night's game.

Pea soup, much like clam chowder, needs to have that consistency first, that you can stand the spoon up in it, but the spoon soon tilts, that's the consistency you want.
Number two: Uh, pea soup on it's own can be a little bland. It wants, uh, a fairly aggressive peppering and salting.
Number three: Pea soup needs a fine dice of ham. Not bacon, not any other meat, not turkey. It needs a fine dice of ham.
Uh, number four: Uh, pea soup scorches easily. You don't wanna heat it on a high heat. You wanna heat it on medium low, just until it's warmed through.
Uh, number five: Pea soup is best made, uh, by hand, not out of a Campbell's can. And the key to pea soup, you want a ham bone, uh, for the stock you make, uh, to, to boil your peas.

True, but he also burnt out Kerry Wood. Cubs fans love sending him home again. He is not, and and never has been a great manager. Good? Maybe, but his Giants, Cubs and Nats teams were LOADED with talent and he never won the big one. Probably will get one more chance next season: probably.

Just did a simple google search to the internet myth that he ruined Mark Prior -

http://www.foxsports.com/mlb/story/former-cubs-ace-mark-prior-i-dont-blame-dusty-baker-for-what-happened-to-me-080516

Good read and sets the record straight. I really think it’s a misinformed mob that is going after Dusty.

Dusty was OK, nothing more.

Gardenhire would have been good in DC.

Dusty is consistently good but let's face it, he hasn't been able to take any team to the next level. Those Cubs teams he managed were World Series teams. Maybe he would be a better fit in a place like Pittsburgh or Cinci, teams with less expectations but don't want to be in the cellar. Dusty seems like a good guy, too. At the end of the day, he's had a great playing and managing career, maybe it's time to enjoy your life a little.

Dusty has managed the Reds. That was before the Nationals.

Maybe they won't. Or worse even make the playoffs. But the point is that management feels they have to make a change in order to try and get over the hump. Either your team has holes you need to fill or the manager isn't capable of getting you there. Clearly they feel the latter.

Gardenhire might have been able to land that which makes me wonder why he would have taken the job in detroit. He undersold himself a bit.

Just my .02 but the team has some holes and was the main issue. I don’t blame them for letting him go but without upgrading some talent I cant see them competing for the pennant. I think there’s about 10 guys you could plug in there for a manager and the results are about the same.
