Solo: A Nerfherder Story
Saw it last night. I liked it, but I'm admittedly kind of a Star Wars blowar.
It was fun, like you would expect with Han, Chewy, and Lando, and not dark like Rogue One. It's weird getting used to someone different as Han. This isn't like Ewan MacGregor playing a young version of a character that we only knew as an old man. This is someone that is playing the same character that moviegoers knew and loved at around the same age. Still, he did a good job. His voice wasn't quite like Harrison Ford, so that made it a little harder to think of him as Han. The guy playing Lando sounded a lot like Billy Dee...the dude should be doing Colt 45 commercials. And Chewy was a dead ringer for the original Chewy.
I'll put some other comments under a spoiler tag....

- Spoiler:
People that only know the movies are going to have a big WTF is going on moment when Darth Maul is revealed in a cameo. Well, actually just Maul, because he ain't no sith anymore, just the head of a major crime syndicate.
But he survived getting chopped in half by Obi Wan. Before you think it's too ridiculous even for Star Wars, remember that Anakin was pretty much just a head, a torso, and one arm at the end of Episode III, and became "more machine than man now, twisted and evil." So Maul does have a robotic lower body (the ladies probably love it), and apparently you could see that a little bit on the screen, though I didn't notice personally.
Anyway, I knew he had survived because my nephews have watched the Clone Wars and Star Wars Rebels cartoons, and he apparently makes appearances in both. I believe his brother saved him and fixed him up. The Clone Wars cartoons are like 10 years old or more, so this idea of Maul surviving pre-dates Disney's ownership of the franchise, and certainly pre-dates any plans for this Solo spin off movie.
Someone more family with the books, cartoons, etc., might know more about whether this crime syndicate, and Maul's part in it, is in those.
If this film does well, they definitely have it set up for a potential sequel(s), but if not, this didn't end on a big cliff hanger or anything. Just some things set up for possibly doing more if they want.
As a side note, this is the first Star Wars franchise film that does not have an appearance by R2D2 and C3PO (unless there's a little easter egg that I didn't catch).

The 'dude' playing Lando is Childish Gambino/Donald Glover. If you don't know who he is, you need to start watching Community.

The name Donald Glover sounds vaguely familiar, but never heard of the other name or that show.InTenSity wrote:The 'dude' playing Lando is Childish Gambino/Donald Glover. If you don't know who he is, you need to start watching Community.

Donald Glover is maybe the most talented producer / actor / musician / writer doing anything these days. Everything he touches is golden.

Re: Solo: A Nerfherder Story
Was tracking to $150-$180 before release not looking at $115 million for holiday weekend.
Production budget was $250 million and promo budget is rumored to be $100 million. Disney needs this thing to get to $700 to see a profit

Saw it today. Went in with zero expectations and when all was said and done I thought it was pretty good. There really wasn’t anything that deep or moving about it but I liked the characters and the story was pretty good. Basically just a fun summer film.

And comedian. His special on Netflix is funny as hell.
He could win the mythical EGOT.

Pretty good argument why the new franchise is bombing. Makes a good point every friggin movie is about an orphan. Even Han is presented to us as a dickens style orphan robbing in the slums.
