Questions about Chicago (the city, not the band or musical)

Post by MiamiSpartan on 6/14/2018, 2:38 pm

I'm going to this thing in Chicago in September, and I haven't been in 20 years. And actually had only been a couple of times before that, so I don't know the city much at all. Not planning on seeing any sights, just flying in, going to this event, staying the night, then flying out. So mostly I want to know about the area around this event. It's at the Concord Music Hall on Milwaukee Ave near Armitage Ave. Looks to be kind of between the Bucktown, Wicker Park, and Logan Square areas.

What's this area like? Doesn't look to be any hotels in the area. I see that it's right off the Blue Line train, between the California and Western stations. Is it a good idea to be walking a few blocks to one of those stations, or taking the Blue Line from there at what will probably be midnight or after? As the Blue Line looks to go to the airport, I was thinking of staying at a hotel near the airport and just taking the Blue Line to the event, but am wondering if that's a bad idea to be taking it back late at night.

Sounds mysterious. LARPing convention?

Hipster central. The only time I used the rail system late at night was to get from downtown to Midway. That was fucking sketchy. Not sure about the Blue Line.

Damn shame you won’t be outside. Chicago in September is beautiful, and your Quidditch tourney would be fun in the elements.

Just take an Uber Miami. I'm sure the leader of your Guild will reimburse you.

Seems like a long way to go for a Peter Popoff sermon. Just ask them to mail you a bottle of miracle spring water.

I was going to guess hipster. The only hotels that came up on Trip Advisor within 3 miles of this place were $26/night, and yet were 4.5/5.0 rated. I had to look out of curiosity, and they're total hipster loft type of places. I'll try to research the Blue Line more, unless anyone else offers up opinions. I'm so not a public-transportation guy, having only lived in Michigan and Miami.

And as bad ass as Larping or Quiditch would be (not really), this is actually for a heavy metal concert. So yeah, I'll still be around a gigantic losers, but a different type of loser than larping or quiditch would bring out.

Helloween. They're my favorite band and last time I saw them was 30 years ago at Cobo Hall. They haven't played within 800 miles of me since (not counting when they've done 70,000 tons of metal or other cruises out of South Florida, and don't bother to do any local show when passing through because the metal scene down here sucks ass). But with this Pumpkins United reunion-ish tour, I have to do it.

Don't know the proximity, but I really liked the West Egg Cafe.

Miami, rock out and have a good time!

Also, insert "you gonna get raped" meme.
