And Couch seizes this chance to go after Dantonio and Izzo RE:OTL

Look, that's just PR 101 in the modern era. If you did it and get caught, own it. Tell the world what you leaned and how you won't make that mistake again.

I read that earlier and I didn't think it was that bad. I didn't take it as him going after them, just him saying whatever happens going forward, make sure you tell the truth and get in front of it. And I agree.

Wags if you find your pw you must follow Kato. He's a huge Milwaukee sports fan and a spaz.

This is the part that offended me....but you know I'm a more fragile flower than most. ;-)

Meyer’s last 10 days should again serve as a lesson for every college coach in the country: Denying the truth is almost aways worse than one’s actual truth. Michigan State’s Mark Dantonio and Tom Izzo, who’ve recently faced questions about their own decisions and player conduct within their programs, would be wise to heed this lesson, should times get tough again.

An admission of poor judgment is forgivable. Thinking you might have handled something differently if you had to do it over again is understandable. Lying brazenly to our faces is harder to accept.

Then after hectoring them...he basically admits the story was bullshit.

Dantonio and Izzo haven’t done what Meyer just did — contradict clear and present evidence of their own wrongdoing or handling of wrongdoing. They’ve been vague and defiant since the ESPN Outside The Lines report first dropped last Jan. 26, which effectively blurred the Larry Nassar case with previous accusations of violence and sexual assault against members of their programs.

Neither has ever addressed the specifics of that story. Unlike McMurphy’s report on Meyer, which has led to an onslaught of national opinions and momentum, the holes and supposition in ESPN’s piece on Izzo and Dantonio left both of them standing
.

He's an ass.

Clear and present evidence? JFC, what does that even mean? Did Couch mean clear and convincing evidence? Maybe he should watch fewer Jack Ryan movies and read more work of good columnists so he learns some things. He definitely needs an editor to coach him and in the age of downsizing in newspapers, he’s not getting any help.

He was talking generally when he mentioned lying to our faces. The context seemed pretty clear when reading the article, that if you do something wrong, it can be forgivable, but if you double down on that and lie about it when confronted, that's too far. As Floyd said, that's just PR 101 in this day and age.

My biggest issue with his article was when he said that Dantonio and Izzo were vague and defiant. I mean yeah, they were vague, but Couch fucking knows that they had to be vague. To blame the coaches for following the direction of the University's lawyers is just horseshit whining.

I was being framed for murder, luckily I had receipts and security camera footage showing I was out of town that night. Ultimately the holes and supposition is the state's case allowed me to walk free.

Urban tweeted out a statement. Basically says he reported the 2015 incident and was sloppy with his words at media day because he wasn't prepared to discuss.

They're going to play he said she said and claim they believed Smith's version of the events.

Sorry Zach, what you've said (in your own words) is domestic abuse. Things don't "get out of hand", there are no "aggressive situations" and you don't "restrain" your wife. Domestic abuse is more than just 'hitting'. You can play the "self defense" card exactly one time. After that your a fucking liar or a complete fucking moron for not exiting the situation.

Zach Smith is a straight up dirtbag.

Yep. That's what they're going with, though, no doubt. They are going to paint her as batshit crazy and claim she tried to set him up. And Urbs will survive because they will claim he reported up the chain to AD Smith in 2015 but didn't fire Zach because her story wasn't credible. And thus the only thing Urban will technically be on the hook for is lying to the media at the B1G Media Days.

My first thought, too. He allowed Smith to remain employed after ‘15. Starting to think it’s possible Urban either gets fired or suspended for a season. As noted above, buckeye football is bigger than one coach, no matter how good, and eventually this situation will get grafted to the wrestling problems the same way it happened at MSU.

Current deal with Nike is estimated at 36.85 million for the last 10 years. They are about to renegotiate and I'm guessing it will be in the 45 million dollar range. Just pay the damn players.

still don't see Meyer going anywhere.. story seems to have died down, the assistant coach was fired, the start of football season/other ancillary stories (like the Carolina one) will drown out any remaining outrage.

I've yet to see a good model for how this would work, but here's a strawman.

1. You can't just pay the football players. You have to pay every scholarship athlete something.
2. To be fair, each division of a sport's players would have to be paid the same amount (2nd string kicker, assuming he's on scholarship, at Western gets the same amount as Lewerke). Which means...
3. The "haves" will have to subsidize the "have nots" even more than they already do (Socialist fuckers!!!).

How about some #'s:

According to scholarshipstats.com, there are 177,559 total athletic scholarships available in the US.

At an average of $1k per schollie thats ~ $177 million/year or ~$35 million per power 5 conference. They could pull that from petty cash. For reference, the current B1G TV contract pays ~$400 million/year.

Doesn't seem too outlandish/expensive.

Yeah, every now and then I'll read an article about all the challenges around paying the athletes. If it really is so difficult a good start might be easing these types of restrictions. It's a billion dollar industry, campuses are building recruit welcome centers, upgrading stadiums, facilities and paying millions for coaches. I buy into Jay Bilas argument that the reason why they say it's so complex is because they don't want to do it. I also agree with him when h says the fair and right thing to do is figure out a way to compensate the athletes.

They want paid go pro. NFL and NBA early entry rules should both be removed. Enjoy your free education that tons of us would gladly take. Most of them aren't smart enough to realize the opportunity they have been given with all the free stuff they are being handed.

I tend to lean this direction... if they decide to stay at MSU over the course of 4 years, they are getting paid.. about $100,000.. along with other benefits associated with being a D-I athlete in the Big Ten.

I would present a caveat that often, scholarship athletes don’t have access to the resources they are “handed” during the off-season or during holidays or over the summer. They should.

All the ‘free’ stuff they are handed Falls welll short of their market value. Because this free stuff is a good deal for you or me does not make it a good deal for them. I agree with you they should do away with the one and done and nfl entry rules.
