Genuinely nice man and loved MSU, which makes him the best kind of human. Rest In Peace, and thank you.

This and it can’t be said enough, he put up with some tough stuff during his tenure. Pretty crazy times back then. I thought he was cast in a bad light and handled it with a lot of dignity.

You will be hard pressed to ever know a nicer guy. I had a bunch of interaction with him. His grand daughter and my son went to elementary school together and his former son-in-law is among my best friends. Just a damn good dude and fun to be around. RIP Gus.

Dignity is an excellent word to describe how he handled the situation. I understand from others that he took a lot of shit. My guess is there aren’t many coaches who could’ve handled that episode any better. It sucks that it’s a part of his legacy.

and before his years as MSU coach, led the East Lansing Trojans to a state championship... much more than just a coach.

Yep. Gus was a legend in EL. Everybody knew him and he never forgot a name. When I was coaching at St. Thomas ( sorry about the God reference Bob) his grand daughter was a cheerleader. He gave some advice about how to beat the evil St Gerard. I listened but never beat them. I was kinda the Dave Warner of middle school coaches. And those kids at St G were like 17 years old in eight grade.

Tartans! LOL. The best gym to coach in was Res. Had to teach my guys not to put any arc on their jumper. Any thing above the rim would hit the ceiling. And those east side catholic kids sitting on the stage were assholes.

It’s weird, but I have almost no memory of playing basketball for St.G, other than Father McCue (sp?) sitting on the bench cheering us on. That dude could cuss with the best of them.

I take that back: I remember at least one of the other gyms had tile floor for the court. It was the first time I’d seen something like that, and remember thinking it was weird.
