Well, Juwan got his first rules violations out of the way (31:10 mark)

Knowing how Beilien talks and the context, he was trying to say 'slugs'. Mountain meet mole hill.
That said, his persona and mannerisms are not a good fit for the NBA. He is the definition of 'Ok Boomer'

Re: John Beilein to the Cavs
Serious talk for a minute. The word thug is code for racists to demean black people for a while now. From all accounts Beiline (however the fuck you actually spell his name) seems like a good guy, but he should have known better. Even if he meant to say slugs.
Any respect he did have with his players is likely gone now and he'll probably lose his job at the end of the year if not sooner. Sorry dude. The world isn't fair sometimes.

He should heat up some water in front of the players to demonstrate how quickly a team’s demeanor can go from cold stares to a boiling rage.

Me too, glad someone got in trouble for it before I used it in public. Won’t use it anymore. I was talking about the guy who sucker punched another guy in the bar at St. Clair Shores with my wife and called him a fucking thug. If it comes up in conversation outside my home I won’t say it. Also won’t use it in my home. I don’t understand all the words that have become racist, but if they bother a race or people, I think I have enough other words in my vocabulary that I can eliminate them.

I'm pretty sure the Pistons (with Laimbeer) were called thugs back in the day.
I don't think that connotation with the current Cavs' roster makes sense.
I'm guessing Beilein didn't quite understand the negative reaction it might have, and I'm not buying he meant to say "slugs". I'm guessing the players got a good chuckle out of it and don't really care that much. They're getting paid and they're on a crappy team. He seemed to be having some issues before. This probably won't help.

For those of you who were unaware of thug's connotations, maybe we ought to warn you not to use posse either, just to be safe.

So, it's out of my vocabulary starting today. Also, what about the word "Gangster"? Is that also considered the new "N" word?
From now own, no more N-G-or T words. feel bad I came late to the game for the t-word, but as I've said, I haven't ever used it in public that I can recall, and will not use it from here on out anywhere.

I mean, I think you can still safely call white guys any of these things (other than the N word), but I can't recommend calling a non-white person gangster.

You should’ve been there the day I used the term cotton pickin’ on Instagram. Hoo, boy, did that cause a stir.
I’m with DWags on this, though; if it’s a word that upsets others, there’s plenty of other words to use. Except moist. Sorry, ladies, there’s no other way to describe my cakes.

I once new a (white) man who lovingly called his (white) granddaughter a "cotton picker". No idea why. This was in the 70's. Seemed harmless at the time, but probably wouldn't go over too well these days.

I'm as liberal as the next guy but the political correctness in speech and ok fingers and whatever is crazy. I get the n word, but these newly encoded words are getting to the silly point. Also, righteous indignation over legit things looses its impact if ok fingers is the new n word.

Also....
So one of the good guys on Twitter, an author I follow, said something about a new fad of ladies wearing short pants and the thread turned into 100s of post of righteous indignation of woke idiots shitting on him for commenting on something a woman may choose to wear. I had Republican feelings. Then I was nauseous.

I generally give people the benefit of the doubt. Bielein isn't known to be that kinda person. He is known to not be the most articulate speaker. Regardless, WOP is right, the damage is done.

My dad grew up in southern Missouri and used the term all the time in front of us kids. It’s a term that was frequently used in cartoons I repeatedly watched early in my life. It isn’t a term I’ve used often, and have used it so infrequently that it would even be an overstatement to say I use it sporadically. But it’s probably encoded somewhere in my tiny brain and I used it the one time and all hell broke loose. I apologized, but that wasn’t enough for some of the respondents. That’s on them, not me.

And oh-by-the-way, apparently use of the term you guys has fallen into disfavor by certain people. I’ll leave it to you guys to come to your own conclusions as to who might object to that.

I find it equally frustrating and fascinating. Pejoration is very interesting to me. The linked article has some examples, others I've seen are things like toilet and all the different names we've come up with to avoid just saying "I'm going to the toilet." The same sort of thing goes on with slurs and whatnot. Once you see it clearly, it becomes obvious that it's not the words that are offensive, but the ideas they express, which makes censorship seem very silly.
So long as people have hate for others, they will find a way to express it linguistically, and that's ultimately what we're trying to stop with censorship. It's an unwinnable battle.

Coincidental sidebar story to your post: I’ve always had an interest in the origins of words, but I don’t consciously give that consideration to every word I speak/write. Case in point: I’m one of those who always gets a cowlick if my hair is cut too short. I’ve known about and used the word cowlick as far back as I can remember. But, it wasn’t until a couple of weeks ago that I actually considered the source of the word. Sure enough, it’s as obvious as you’d think, dating back to the 16th century and coined because it looks like a cow licked the back of someone’s head.
Here endeth the cool story, broheim.

i mean, the OK thing is stupid but it was expressly adopted by neo Nazi jackasses. they're to blame, not "PC culture" or whatever.
holding your right arm straight out at a 45 degree angle isn't inherently evil either, but it was adopted by a certain group and now it is what it is.
