If you're in Orlando or Tampa, a good side trip is Crystal River (maybe an hour and a half from of those cities). They're famous for Manatees, but also have some amazing fresh water springs. Peak Manatee season are the winter months, cause they go up the river to the springs that are a constant 72 degrees. You can swim with them, but it is illegal to touch them. It was pretty freaky when this big fucker swims right under me, literally inches from my chest as I was floating/snorkeling. So close that I can't move or swim away or else I would be initiating contact. Good times, and I recommend if your wife/kids would be into Manatees.

Manistee is kind of cool, too, I guess.

Best place to find manatees in the winter is near the nuclear plants. Apparently the water is warmer there.

The best place to view Sea Cows in Michigan is Pine Knob during Kid Rock season.

There's a place right near JB's Fish Camp (good food btw) in New Smyrna Beach where you can walk out on a dock and look for manatees. I've also seen a couple of them in Tampa Bay, or if you want to get really close to one go to Mote Marine Laboratory in Sarasota near St Armand's Key.
