Post by WhiteBoyHatcher 2015-07-09, 23:41

Suggested activities?

Kids are 5.5 and 2.5. The 5 year old really wants to see the bridge so we're definitely driving over. I don't know shit about St. Ignace, Mac City, the island or otherwise. I kind of know there's a Mystery Spot with Paul Bunyan across the bridge. Not sure otherwise. Will probably need a place to grab lunch with kid friendly food.

Time window is fairly firm, noon to 4 PMish. Help me Swill.

Nowhere did I proclaim this indelible landmark to be or not be "Up North". I just want to know the funnest shit to do in the general vicinity of it after driving over it and/or back.

Both worlds for me mofo. I grew up with the hunter rednecks in Manistee and now make a living on the east side. However truth be told I'm scared to death of both. So just call me little bitch and I'll move on.

I'd drive across the bridge and take Sheplers over to Mackinac Island. Do a horse drawn carriage tour, hit the butterfly house, and explore the view from the fort on your way back to docks.

Also, don't get caught on the bridge when it swings over to the Island, WBH. You will be on it for hours. Check the schedule.

Get pasties from Lehtos on US2 west of the bridge. They suck but are about the best you will find without driving to the Keweenaw. No fucking ketchup or gravy

Cut River Bridge is 25-30 miles up US2 from St. Ignace. Take the kids down to the river to look at the bridge. The hike back up to deck level might tire them out. Eat another pasty

I'll agree with Pantry on Lehto's, best  choice close to St Ignace for a pasty.   If you go to Cut River stop in the Cut River store and get some smoked whitefish, you'll thank me.

Other options -

in St. Ignace - Clyde's drive in, kind of a legendary burger joint.

if you're willing to stretch your time frame a bit  - Tahquemenon Falls is about 55 miles from the bridge as are the Soo Locks.  Either one of them would add some memories.

On the LP side - Fort Michilimackinac

That's on the west side of 75 - on the east side is the old Lighthouse with a park around it.  Have your kids go in wading/swimming there and snap some pics - I've got some photos of mine there at various ages with the bridge in the background they make nice pictures.

All I've got for now.

Cut out the carriage ride then. Just walk around, check out butterfly house and fort, and enjoy boat ride there and back.

4 hours to cross the bridge (and back) and a trip to the Island would be tight. Normally, I would advise against going to Fudge Island. But a short trip like that might actually be a good idea. I'd skip the butterfly thing and the Fort though.

Mac Island is great and the kids will love seeing the horses. But you've whittled down the itinerary to a boat ride there and back. The fort is great because it is free and you can wander about from building to building. Also has great views from up there.

How long is the boat ride? I haven't been to the island since visiting a friend in college.

Make sure you know the difference between Mackinaw and Mackinac so the locals don't think that you're "not from around here" and give you trouble.

Looking at horse poop is free too.

He's got little kids. Lugging them to the Fort would be a pain. Take a bike ride, buy some fudge, step in some horse poop...that's the itinerary.

We're on a schedule.

I remember going to the forts and thinking they were pretty cool as a kid. Definitely a stand out memory. The bridge as well.

I can't remember which fort it was at but I remember them shooting a cannon.

On the island definitely remember watching them make fudge at one of those shops.

Last, your kids are too young but for the future my favorite thing I ever did on the island was rent a bike and ride around it. It's stunning and there's a rock arch on it.

Seriously? Going to the Island in that kind of time frame will feel very rushed. But, 2 hours is usually about the point where you realize you want to get the hell out of there. So, it's an option.

I think kids under 5 are free on the ferry. They might like the boat ride, or be terrified. Your call. Load them up with sugar for the boat ride back, and they'll crash in the car.

You should drive over and back on the bridge a bunch of times but change it up. Sometimes drive on the grate, sometimes don't. When you are directly in the middle, yell, "We're in the U.P. and the L.P. at the same time!"

Gustafsons west of the bridge 10 miles or so - is that the best smoked fish. That is where I have gone a couple times. Might find a beach on the way. Take them to the Mystery Spot - it is cheesy and a rip but the kids will like it. I think they even have putt putt. Not much else to do, I don't know if the fort or anything in Mac City is worthile. Soo Locks boat tour - not sure if there is enough time.
There and back to island might be the best bet but seems rushed.

fort michilli & the light house is good advice, note that you can go around behind the gift shop and stand under the bridge - it sounds stupid but it is pretty cool (and scary from a DHS vs ISIS standpoint)

also tTy is giving quality advise, although we always stop on the return trip to piss on the sunset side of the bridge and towards Wisconsin rather than Canada.

I've never done it, but you can tour the ice breaker Mackinaw, then walk across the street for some ice cream and or fudge and tons of touristy trinket shops that little kids would love.

Pre 9/11 True Story Alert:

I was coming back from a hockey game in Canada once, probably 20 years ago and crossing the boarder into Port Huron (where I lived at the time) via the Blue Water bridge. A couple buddies of mine asked to get out on the Canadian side because they wanted to walk over the bridge. I don't recall whether or not I tried to dissuade them at all, but they ended up taking a leak off the top of it, and then they were detained and questioned on the US side for 45 minutes while I waited for them in the car. 4 hours in the Big Mac bridge area with little kids 502811600
