Carl Banks - Pro Football Hall of Fame case

Post by LooseGoose on 2015-11-23, 11:42

Stated by one of the most respected FB writers in America.

State Your Case: Carl Banks

By Rick Gosselin

Talk of Fame Network

Carl Banks formed one half of the greatest outside linebacker combination of the NFL’s 3-4 defensive era. Maybe of any scheme of any era.

Banks teamed with Lawrence Taylor to dominate offenses and power the New York Giants to two Lombardi Trophies. Banks stuffed ball carriers in the run game and muscled tight ends in the passing game from his strongside linebacker spot. Taylor terrorized quarterbacks in the pocket from his weakside linebacker spot.

Both were named to the 1980s NFL all-decade team. But only half of this combination is enshrined in the Pro Football Hall of Fame. Taylor was a first ballot selection. Banks has been eligible now for 15 years but never even been discussed as a finalist.

There are only 12 outside linebackers in Canton — and not a single set of teammates. Pick one, and the quota is filled. But Banks and Taylor became the first set of linebacking bookends from the same team selected to an all-decade team. No pair has been named to an all-decade team since those Giants.

Banks was an exceptional player. Maybe he should become an exception in Canton as well.

I loved watching Banks play. Anyone know if he has a football-playing son in hs? I'd love to see Carl's Junior in the G&W.

Long ago - sometime in 19 and 87 I was riding a shuttle to catch a flight at Metro and Mr Banks got aboard. Being a MSU fan back then (even before tRCMB or The Swill existed) I immediately knew who he was. And as further confirmation he was sporting a ring nearly the size of Rhode Island on his finger.

Anyway, being young and excitable I said Hi and told him how much I'd loved his play at MSU and would he mind if I looked at his ring? He took it off and let me hold it, pretty damned nice for not knowing me from boo.

So there you have it, my brush with greatness.

There are, or were, lots of really cool and approachable athletes. Gates Brown let me try on his '68 WS ring. As a lifelong Tigers' fan, that was an amazing moment.

I'd love to see him in the HoF. How many guys got there with only two Pro-Bowls, though? Being named to the All-Decade squad is great, but consider he was only a starter for four years during the decade. Both of those probably hurt him.

That's the response I was expecting.

Never been there. Do they serve black bean burgers? Tofu tacos?

Carl's Junior is consistently the best fast food in the nation. Their burgers are damned good, I rank them above In and Out.

That's a bold statement, especially since I've lumped them in with Hardee's because of the shared tv spots. In-n-Out is pretty much all I've eaten when grabbing fast food on the West Coast. I'm not in CA anytime soon, but I'll have to remember this conversation.

Wore Steve Furness ring one night at George Perles house as he was wasted and hitting on Mary Kay's daughter. But the best ever was getting to put on Steve Rademacher's ring. That's right baby. New York Jets. Caught passes from Joe Willy.

True. But damn, the game that turned the NFL on its ear.

Carl may be the best linebacker I every personally witnessed in Green & White. I had to play against him in inter-mural hoops. Bad-ass in persona, and worthy of the hall IMO.
