I mean, I get what you're saying but you sure sound like a heartless dick.

I never claimed to be the most empathetic person.

But you're right... we should go back to arguing about limiting freedoms.

Hey maybe we should all be political dicks and make sarcastic remarks about shit and act like heartless assholes on both sides of the political spectrum. Because politics are more important than working on fixing shit.

I hope your bro-in-law and nephew are doing well, WBH. They weren't there, I'm assuming and hoping, correct?

The Facebook profile picture thing was an interesting social study to me. It is weird how we selectively pick which outrageous tragedy we are going to all rally around. I mean, there are so many. Why did everyone pick France? Are you judged if you don't do it? Do people do it because they don't want to be judged?

I dunno. There are a lot more questions that could be asked that there aren't really solid answers for. It's interesting though.

Exactly what I was getting at.

Wasn't there another mass killing in a "darker" country that same weekend, too?

I was in Paris two weekends before that and actually stayed 4 blocks from the Bataclan... so I took an interest when it came on the news based on my recent proximity. But I can't say I felt anymore outrage than normal. Because, well... this is just the new normal.

People love to join the crowd. Spread like wildfire. Mob mentality.

Can't really blame people for spreading awareness I guess, probably did more than "praying".

You're right, Trav.  I'm going to nuke the Cali Republic idea and start raising awareness for Mali with their flag and a motto that somehow came to mind to save some lives.  They got fucked.... Not quite sure about my tagline though.... Does it work?

You're going to have to call Zuckerberg bro. There was this whole "just hit one button and your pic will turn into this snazziess" thing going on.

I like to do my own work. Makes it personal for me and I feel way better about myself. It would totally cheapen it if I used photoshop or something like that. I would feel like a total fraud or something.

That's more or less it. It's somewhat terrifying that no one cares anymore. The world freaking stopped when this happened once a year in the late 90s, or at least it felt like that. Maybe Im wrong, fuck, I was 16 at the time. Now it feels like it just rolls off our shoulders cause this is just every two weeks news.

Hey, remember when that one reporter got murdered on live tv? That was pretty fucked up. Sort of forgot about that, it's been like 4 months after all. So many more tragedies since that have needed attention.

Well what are we really going to do, WBH? Do you want me to put a call in to the White House and ask our elected officials to make this a pressing matter? Pretty sure it's on their radar.

This is what society does and has always done. Discuss the specifics and what we believe/don't believe the problems are or aren't. If we see an opinion we disagree with we try to explain why we disagree with it.

What are you looking for, really? Of course it's horrible... but it's tough to muster up a somber tribute every single time this happens.

This has always been the world we live in.

Right. And I don't even know what we're arguing about. I guess it's not a problem because of #FREEDOM and #SECOND-AMENDMENT and #LIBERALS and #NRA

I have no fucking idea. No one cares. No one is gonna care until it happens to them.

You youngsters don't remember the 1970s - this is a fucking picnic compared to then. There were large terrorist actions throughout Europe back then - they specialized in shooting up airports and hijacking planes. In the USA we had shootings - I remember the McDonald's shooting, postal workers and also school shootings (I Don't Like Mondays).

More things change the more they stay the same

Hey, remember when that one reporter got murdered on live tv? That was pretty fucked up. Sort of forgot about that, it's been like 4 months after all. So many more tragedies since that have needed attention.

Right. And I don't even know what we're arguing about. I guess it's not a problem because of #FREEDOM and #SECOND-AMENDMENT and #LIBERALS and #NRA

I have no fucking idea. No one cares. No one is gonna care until it happens to them.

I fucking hate politics. Fucking hate. They make me so ragey.

Yeah, it blows. I've made it pretty clear that I'm not the biggest fan of our gunfication of society (I just made that word up) but liberals arguing against it is pretty much like conservatives arguing against abortion. Sometimes you just need to realize that there isn't shit you can do to flat out stop it and maybe it's time to try to influence people.

For instance, conservatives should focus on people not getting pregnant in the first place. Liberals should focus on people not wanting to be murderers. Maybe you don't get exactly what you want, but the whole world is a bit better. You can't get what you want, no matter how loud you scream. So try to accomplish your goals in a different way, because what you're trying now ain't gonna work.

I know LooseGoose was just trying to make a political point but he's right.

We're far safer than we were in those days. Far safer than we were 25 years ago.

Like Roc touched on... we just have the internet and multiple 24 hour news stations now.

All the horrible shit that was happening at a far greater rate back then is now instantly accessible for us to see.

It can make the world "feel" far more dangerous despite the fact the world is far safer, especially here in the US.

We know the fuckers names 2 hours after they are done shooting places up these days via twitter and can watch live streaming video of the cops blasting the cock suckers for fucks sake. 30 years ago, you had to read a newspaper (google it Travis) the next day or wait for Walter Cronkite to come on one of the three TV channels you had or for 60 Minutes to air a story the following Sunday to learn about this shit.

I ain't that old... but I most certainly didn't know shit about the newest angle of the first Gulf War until Dan Rather came on at 6pm over supper. Lasted about half an hour and then Dallas was on.... wait till 11 if you want to know more.

Now I can see pics of the fucker's kids (good luck to them... geez) and smell his axe body spray through a computer screen within a few hours after he just shot up a Christmas party.

Like Ty just... said.

Like I said earlier, we are living in a very angry world. Read some of the posts on this thread.

I would take issue that the world is a safer place than it was 25 years ago. The same communication advances that let us know things faster are the same ones that propagate hate and can enable building supplies of weapons and ammunition very quietly.

I don't think anyone here is so unbalanced they would become so enraged they would kill or injure others but we see it happen whether it's terrorists in Europe using their PS4's network to communicate or activists recruiting Somali immigrants in MN to join the fight in the Middle East via webcasts. The guy who killed the people in the South Carolina church fed his segregationist views via web sites and the guy in Colorado Springs regularly visited the most extreme anti-abortion sites.

I have no clue how to stop it but I don't think we are safer because those who hate and have agendas to use violence to get their way don't feel nearly as isolated as they did 25 years ago.

The statistics just don't jive with that view. Less murders, less rape, less assaults, just overall less crime period... there is 51% less violent crime today than there was in 1991, the property crime has fallen 43% while the population has risen from 253 million in 1991 to 320 million today. What metric are you using, GRR?

You felt isolated from the violence 25 years ago because we were all naturally more ignorant about the violence that was occurring. Now you can watch it happen live while you chew nervously on popcorn in the comfort of your own home while arguing about gun control (pro or against, not trying to single any side out) on your computer in a thread that's updated every 2-3 seconds with new information that the 24 hour news stations can't even keep up with. The 24 hour news stations are dinosaurs compared to the information flow of the internet and the 24 hour news stations make the information flow from 1991 look like they were still using a typewriter. I understand you're talking about the people using violence felt isolated... but it was occurring at a much higher rate 25 years ago, regardless.

We've always lived in a very angry world. But we're in the most peaceful point we've been in the history of civilization with the largest population in the history of civilization. That's the case whether we're talking about 1991, 1291, or 591.
