One of Up North's hidden gems is Beaver Island. No too touristy at all. Some of the beaches are completely empty in case you're into the whole privacy thing. The island has some interesting history too.

James Strang moved his Mormon offshoot group to the island and basically kicked everyone else out. He got power hungry and declared himself king of the island. People didn't like that all that much. Eventually a few of the Irish settlers that got kicked out came back and capped his ass. The assassins were acquitted basically because the guy was an asshole and the island threw them a party. The end.

that's awesome.. kinda reminds me of where I grew up, in terms of vigilante justice, etc - just good 'ol mountain boys you don't wanna cross.. they don't mean anything by it, of course, but you just better watch your back if you suddenly do something to find yourself on their bad side.
