here's a video of Springsteen taking himself more seriously than any of the Beatles..Jethro Bodeen wrote:DWags wrote:I think because so many sound the same. Turns out he has 314 of them.
Somebody actually rated every one of them. My god.
Springsteen was hyped prior to selling a record like no other act in the history of the music business with the exception of the Monkees. He had covers on Newsweek, Time and Rolling Stone that acted as his record company's (Columbia) PR department He believes his own press clippings and takes himself more seriously than any of the Beatles.
He had 1 decent album, 1 fair album and the rest was filler. Banal is the only word necessary to describe his music. He is known for putting on marathon concerts because he had to make-up for the total lack of substance.

Not to mention that he plagiarizes KISS. Good god, pick a better band to steal from.

Look at that clown- the sunglasses, the beard, the hat- all the pretense. Its laughable. I dont particularly care for KISS- but dressed as clowns- they admitted it was all an act. And thats Springsteen- an Act, for which 90% is acting like an "artist" and a serious person. Same goes for Neil Young who I actually like. Its laughable. And those clowns are ALWAYS predictably leftist- because they think it gives them gravitas as social justice warriors. Such utter bullshit and pandering. These are the same assholes that have people arrested for selling t-shirts at their concerts, have lists of demands for their appearances and sue the shit out of anyone for unauthorized use of any of their songs or images. Its business. Its all business. Its the business of bullshitting young people into finding meaning in life through buying their records and concert tickets.

the best version of Backstreets that I'm familiar with..
(full disclosure: I have a bootleg at home of 12 different versions of "Backstreets" from this particular tour. Each "Sad Eyes" story/interlude different)

Re: I honestly thought The Boss only had like 12 songs
one of my top 5 Springsteen tunes...
and it happens to have the best coda in rock music in it. And I'll stand on Eric Clapton's coffee table in my work boots and tell that to both him and Layla.

yeah - and can you imagine being Gaslight.. a band who was endlessly compared to Springsteen and the ESB.. and having Bruce join you on stage.xsanguine wrote:Robert J Sakimano wrote:a semi-break from the glory that is Springsteen... to Springsteen playing with The Gaslight Anthem..

you're right, that is one great record. I've been fortunate enough to have seen them live 4-5 times. I guess their days are done now, though - they left behind some good stuff and Brian Fallon is still making good music with The Horrible Crowes, as well.

Bruce's intro into Across the Border on the Tom Joad tour were always epic.. the quality isn't great but the message and theme remains.

Born to Run
Thunder Road
The Rising
Nebraska
Jungleland or Racing in the Street (he seemed to be unable to decide)

Gaslight is done, Bob?
They had a couple of good albums. I didn't get into them enough to know the names of the albums but I had two of them on repeat for a good month or two.

yep.. at least for the foreseeable future. "The '59 Sound" is one of the best rock records of the decade.. "Handwritten" was great.. their debut record "Sink or Swim" is a classic, as well.xsanguine wrote:Gaslight is done, Bob?

I suspect they had some creative differences.. Brian Fallon had the side project to work on, the other guys went some different ways, too - who ever really knows what the future holds, though.
great, great band - one of the only true "modern" (for lack of a better word) American rock bands that maintained that genuine garage rock Springsteen-inspired Jersey sound.

I once ripped off Pictures Of You for a local commercial in ny, although it came out sounding more like Don't Stop by the Stones... the song was great, either way. I played it live for 2 years after that.
That's all I got left.

as far as "great songs in the genre of spree killing" goes, there aren't too many. Nebraska tells the tale of Charlie Starkweather and 13 year old Caril Ann Fugate. She wasn't charged - it was figured she was kidnapped or, at the very least, being held against her will.
Interesting side note - Caril Ann Fugate eventually moved to Lansing, MI and worked in health care.

maybe Springsteen's best, most complex song that never made it to a more traditional studio release album.. it has appeared in a box set. If you know the backstory, there's lots of hidden, nuanced meaning in this one..
