Founders is in a world of hurt with that depo being released. That Ryan guy sounds like a douche.

that exchange of "what does a black person look like" was mind-boggling. I started laughing halfway through it because it struck me as such an incredulous (and total dick-ish) thing to argue about given the circumstances.tGreenWay wrote:Founders is in a world of hurt with that depo being released. anyhoo.. who knows what the actual truth is, this doesn't sound too good for Founder's Brewing.Evans, a former manager who worked at Founders' Detroit and Grand Rapids locations, alleged “a racist internal corporate culture.”
Some white coworkers exhibited multiple examples of “blatant” racism. Among other issues, they repeatedly used the “N word” around him, and management allegedly named a printer it used the “white guy printer” while labeling the printer for lower-tier employees the “black guy printer.”

That’s a shame. I’ve purchased a lot of their products in the past and really enjoyed their latest Solid Gold Lager. Too many other good brands on the shelf to spend my money on a company that supports this kind of culture. I always like to support Michigan breweries but next time I’ll make mine Bells.

I usually enjoy swinging into Founder's when in GR before a show at The Intersection. Decent beers on the rare occasion where I might want something more craft beer-ish.steveschneider wrote:Robert J Sakimano wrote:I generally steer clear of craft beer.. but, yeah.. this isn't good. I'm all for hearing their side of the story, etc. but, at the very least, the patronizing, juvenile exchange in that deposition just oozes white male privilege makes them look really, really bad.

That one guy represents founders? Or the few employees that are allegedly referenced?
Seems like y’all would have some issue with the similar generalizations regarding the MSU admin and MSU as a whole the past few years. But here it’s cool?

Trying to understand how this is different from that scenario but message board posters gonna message board. Letting a few individuals ruin an org for ya seems to be shortsighted.

Papa John's had it's own problems and they seem to be on the right track. I never buy their pies because in NYC I had access to superior pizzas but I'm glad Shaq came in gained a leadership role in the company and is working to fix this issue.
Regarding Founders, I agree probably more info needs to come out but from what we've seen and can verify so far it's not good. Also, here's a statement from Founders counsel -
https://foundersbrewing.com/latest-news/2019/statement-regarding-metro-times-article/
I find it odd that the company hasn't also issued any statements about how it's a place of inclusion and diversity. Seems like their MO is to just go on the defensive. In the meantime I'm going to take a pause from Founders and enjoy other brews. If they can provide assurance that they are a diverse work space and do not tolerate bigotry I'll gladly crack another one open. Cheers!

Won’t matter in a couple of months anyway, Steve. Next year, Founder’s stops being a Michigan company and becomes an internationally owned company.

was at Stober's the other day (what else is new) and apparently PBR is making some sort of coffee-infused beer.

Cadillac Mountain Stout from Bar Harbor Brewing is the best stout I've had. Wish I could get it here.

Stopped at the store today and saw that for the first time. Sorta wanted to try it but wasn't in the mood for something that heavy. Got a 12 of regular Two Hearted. Maybe next time.InTenSity wrote:Double two hearted is very tasty. Caught me by surprise. 11% A/V.

Re: Craft beer
I generally find the higher the ABV, the sweeter the beer is. For example, Bell's Expedition Stout is 10.5% and too sweet for me. Know people that pour it over vanilla ice cream to serve as dessert.AvgMSUJoe wrote:is it super bitter?InTenSity wrote:Double two hearted is very tasty. Caught me by surprise. 11% A/V.

Have grown to dislike most barrel-aged beers (Founders Backwoods Bastard, KBS, CBS, etc) finding them also too sweet. Don't like porters. About the only high octane beer I like anymore is Hopslam, probably because the hops balance the sweet.
Will try Double Two Hearted eventually.

Re: Craft beer
Was driving by a local beer store for a couple weeks and they were closed. Went by again and there's a sign out front saying "Thanks for 15 years".
Store has been there going back at least to when I was in high school (probably far longer) under other owners. Use to have a small deli and also made pizza years back. It's in an odd location that is mostly residential with a large church and high school not far down the road. Building is very close to the main road. Pretty dumpy with poor parking...kinda added to its charm.
Doubt the current owner can sell the business, as is, and is likely just going to try to sell the property. Narrow, but deep piece of land. No idea who would want it or how it could be repurposed where it sits.

Re: Craft beer
A sales rep that calls on me gave me a 3 month subscription to The Original Craft Beer Club. Each month, I get 12 bottles. 3 each of 4 different beers. So free beer every month for 3 months and a lot of beers that I wouldn't otherwise try. I'm not a big enough connoisseur to know what the best craft breweries are outside of a few.
Got first shipment yesterday.
2 from Dick's in Washinton, an IPA and an Irish Red.
2 from River Horse in NJ, an Oatmeal Milk Stout and a Chocolate Porter.
I much prefer dark beers, so am happy that half of the first batch are a stout and porter.
