Hmm this does put a much different light. While I hate that animals are used for research, I too was required to use animals for my thesis. The abandonment of the lab is absolutely terrible. Why do we always have such crappy options to choose from?
The other options aren’t as crappy as him you just haven’t heard from them yet because he’s a gagillionaire that threw money at ads starting at the super bowl. They are starting to spend more now, which is nice. There’s Whitmer, who is a career state politician type. The likely winner once it’s all done. She’s fine. About what you’d expect a focus group politician to be. She’s fine. Wouldn’t do anything monumentally bad, which to me sometimes is just fine these days. There’s el Sayed who is a young dude that is a doctor that worked in government in Detroit. He’s more aggressively progressive than she is. Not as worried about walking the fine line. Probably doesn’t have a chance in hell of winning this year (on account of the last like 20 posts) but is in it to build up name recognition for the future.
Anyway, I’d look a little more at those two before throwing your hat at thannedar. To me that dude is just bad news all around.
I've known about Whitmer. I haven't put my finger on it, but there's something that really bugs me about her. It may not be logical, and I will look into it.
I am not familiar with the other guy at all.

It's really difficult but in the Trump world of 2018 I have to suppress my feelings about his @umichfootball thing. I really like him from what I've seen and read so far.

Re: Gretchen Whitmer?
Whitmer is in a tough spot. A GOP interest group is already running negative ads on every local TV news cast and network evening news.
They are using the gender issue with a subliminal Granholm is a women , Whitmer is a woman and you know what happened with Granholm. (They never mention who was in The White House or which party controlled the legislature but that's no surprise)
Unfortunately this is MI, not MA and MI isn't ready for a governor named Shri or Abdul. If either is on the ballot I know there will be a helluva lot of voters over 50 who will vote for Bill as a default.

Dems have done a truly shitty job recruiting and cultivating young, energetic, progressive candidates. They’ve sucked at it for years.

What this imperial presidency has done, however, has solidified a base of people who will back that type of candidate from here out. I don’t know that they’re republicans or conservatives but they are who they are

I just think it’s the whole “super focus grouped politician” thing. Which... ultimately it’s about how will she actually govern and not whether you want to be BFFs with the person on the TV. I don’t dig the try to say the right thing all the time to the point that you come off as so vanilla approach. But as a governor I think she’d be just fine and knows what she’d be doing.

Nice talking point but I don’t think that’s true anymore. Take a look around at any number of the special elections or candidates for this year. If you do that, it suggests that this post is hilariously incorrect.

I'd suspect Whitmer gets the nomination but I might be skewed only because she's a known quantity and has name recognition in mid-Michigan. Not quite as well known outside the 517.

People interpret their holy tomes in many ways that would be considered blasphemous by fundamentalists. See Christianity. Like any religious garment, if it is the woman's choice to wear it, everyone else should fuck off. It's not repression.

Re: Gretchen Whitmer?
Is this the right thread for this? Nah. Whatever I don’t like making new ones for something like this.
Abdul el Sayed is on Chris Hayes’ podcast this week called “why is this happening.” It’s usually a pretty interesting listen that goes way more in depth on specific and sometimes abstract topics than you’d hear on the news. This weeks with Abdul though is about the specifics of health care policy and if you’re so inclined it’s definitely worth a listen.

I really really liked one of the first episodes in that podcast that went super in depth on middle eastern politics. Talks a lot about MBS and Iran and Qatar how all of those things play together. It was awesome. I can find the episode title if you want... hell, it might be worth another listen anyway given current eventsFloyd Robertson wrote:Travis of the Cosmos wrote:Is this the right thread for this? Nah. "Stacking". Article title says "Flooding", yet focuses solely on ONE transition team appointment. Can you have a stack of one? A flood of one? Also, transition teams are temporary. How about we save the outrage until she poisons a city.

Re: Gretchen Whitmer?
Point is you are hard pressed to name a MI governor beginning with Stevens T Mason in 1837 who hasn’t made appointments based on relationships with powerful groups. Started with lumber, then agriculture, copper mining and since the 1900’s its been automotive.
I identify as a progressive but I’m also a pragmatist and while Whitmer will never be perfect for idealists, she’s a better person to lead the state for the next 4 years than we could have had if Bill Schuette was on duty trying to be Scott Walker redux.

Re: Gretchen Whitmer?
Couple things...
A) Splinter's issue with appointing this dude (along with the 2 other doctors... including superstar Flint lady... which they don't talk about) is he wont want "single payer"... NEWS FLASH. The state of Michigan can't create it's own medicaid, not matter how much the uber-libs want. It's a national issue. (Also, it's not necessarily a Dem-wide platform issue.)
2) The other issue they state as a problem is "insist on cozying up to health insurance CEOs while everyone else struggles with higher premiums, deductibles, and copays."... Michigan's actually went down last year. So confusing and just wrong.
III) Splinter is part of the group that own deadspin... which implies anyone center of Bernie's crazy leftist cousin look like a writer from the "Weekly Standard".
"Corruption" is a strong word.
