Drove through Lewiston the other day. Seemed like they were logging the shit out of the area around Garland resort.

Lake Wobegon is a virus-infected cesspool compared to the sunkissed culturally diverse tapestry that is life in Mio.NigelUno wrote:Robert J Sakimano wrote:I bet it's a wonderful morning in Mio.. children playing, laughing.. neighbors helping each other.. a delicate smile and wave.. the universal gesture of "hello, friend".. an American flag rustling in the wind like the warm symbolic welcome of grandma's apple pie emanating from her well-worn oven.. a pair of weathered work boots at the door - an indication of hard work surpassed only by a deep love of family and faith.

That sounds like Lake Wobegon.

Should of grown up poor like me. While all my rich friends would get Big Mac's and egg McMuffins my mom would slap together a burger between two pieces of white bread some lettuce tomato mayo and tell me, "this is just as good". Same with the McMfuffin, "your friends moms are lazy, they don't want to wake up and make this for their kids like I do every day".
Poor people. We ate together more often.

it is true.. I grew up on the lower end of the socioeconomic scale of the mountain south.. I rarely recall going out - even to a fast food place - before the age of 12 or so.DWags wrote:Watch Out Pylon! wrote:

of course, the availability then wasn't what it is now. I think the closest McDonalds, Burger King, etc was about half an hour away at the time. Still - we didn't ever hit up the diners or even the truck stop.
that said, I'm glad to see that Mio is finally taking a bold leap into 1987 and remodeling their hub for culinary delight and social connection.

LOL, I think that's why I thought of it. Yeah, I remember in Coleman Michigan my dad and mom would take us to the Midland McDonalds once a month maybe. Wow! We'd be so geeked. My sister and I would share a burger and fries and a coke, my older brother would get his own. I think he was like 7 then. I don't know, maybe we weren't poor, maybe every family was more like that. Who the fuck really remembers.

exactly - we were all equally poor, which meant that we were also equally rich. Â Â
I remember going to friends house after school or in the summer.. if my standard for whether or not their family had money was if they had Little Debbie snacks on hand.

I was in the same boat. We lived in a pretty small town and McD's was the only fast food joint around back then. We would get McDonald's about once every few months. Those fries were like crack to me.

I think I'll approach the East Lansing City Council to see if we can name Mio as a "sister city".. this would enable us to have a cultural exchange program that would be the envy of the entire fruited plain.

Tracfone in the hinterland! It uses Verizon I believe. Signal sucks in Oscoda. Oscoda is the flint of the sunrise side btw.

Oh I completely forgot. Stopped into my favorite racist red neck bigots store in Oscoda. He dropped two coon bombs and one N bomb. The pregnant unmarried girl in her early 20’s agreed with everything he was saying. Although she drop any racial slurs she “heard “they” were tearing down statues everywhere.”

What’s the name of the store so I can avoid it and instead die of thirst if I’m ever stranded in Oscoda? One more question: Why are you giving this asshat your business?

It’s called The Dam store. It’s on the Au Sable In the middle of nowhere. Unfortunately it’s one of the tiny accounts on the sales route I purchased.
