Climate Change Science Thread
We have a few climate change threads, but I thought having one dedicated to the science of it would be a good addition.
Breaching a 'carbon threshold' could lead to mass extinction
Breaching a 'carbon threshold' could lead to mass extinction
What does this all have to do with our modern-day climate? Today's oceans are absorbing carbon about an order of magnitude faster than the worst case in the geologic record -- the end-Permian extinction. But humans have only been pumping carbon dioxide into the atmosphere for hundreds of years, versus the tens of thousands of years or more that it took for volcanic eruptions or other disturbances to trigger the great environmental disruptions of the past. Might the modern increase of carbon be too brief to excite a major disruption?
According to Rothman, today we are "at the precipice of excitation," and if it occurs, the resulting spike -- as evidenced through ocean acidification, species die-offs, and more -- is likely to be similar to past global catastrophes.

Man if Guest were still around he'd be flooding this thread with news clips from the 1920's predicting cold weather or some shit. I never really got what he was trying to convey with that nonsense.

In bleak report, U.N. says drastic action is only way to avoid worst effects of climate change
Might as well just give up on humanity surviving beyond 2300 or so.
Might as well just give up on humanity surviving beyond 2300 or so.
But the world’s carbon emissions have moved in the opposite direction. The United States’ energy-related CO2 emissions rose 2.7 percent last year, after a gradual decline. That increase came as the Trump administration continued to roll back Obama-era climate regulations and made clear that the United States, once a leader in pushing for climate action, will withdraw from the Paris accord in 2020.

The first question is so stupid but take note Bill Gates gives another warning. Not that remarkable though, even I have been predicting catastrophe due to climate change. If I can see it then I don't think that makes Bill Gates prediction that special.

America has been wearing a dunce cap these days. I bet when the eco system starts to beCome uninhabitable people on MSM will have pundits saying no one could have seen this coming, and Fox News will call it a liberal hoax.

Nailed it in a way. People are more likely to believe a conspiracy on Facebook than science. Sums up America 2020.

These motherfuckers are getting aggressive with the climate WOs. They’re going to need some legislation to back it up. Let’s hope they can get it or that they have the balls to kill the filibuster.

Scientists are still researching the causes of the snow crab population collapse, which likely include increased predation as well as stresses from the warmer water that caused crabs’ metabolisms to increase and could have led to starvation.

Yes. One of the crab seasons was cancelled last year as well. A few boats were fishing cod.

I heard that all the crabs died when greenway finally shaved his pubes after decades of neglect

Re: Climate Change Science Thread
Abstract
The incidence of pubic lice infestations is estimated to be between 1.3% and 4.6%, with an average incidence of 2% worldwide. It is also estimated that 70% to 80% of adults now remove pubic hair in part or entirety, using a variety of methods. It is hypothesized that the destruction of this pubic hair habitat may account for the falling incidence of pubic lice and may possibly lead to its eradication or atypical presentation.
Aim: To report the changing incidence of pubic lice infestation from our unit over the last 10 years and assess its association, if any, with pubic hair removal of any kind.
Methods: Assessment of medical records and questionnaires were used to identify the incidence of hair removal and pubic lice infestation over a 10-year period. Data were anonymized and analyzed to identify any correlation.
Results: A significant and strong correlation between the falling incidence of pubic lice infections and increase in pubic hair removal was observed, with a Pearson correlation r value of 0.9686 (95% confidence intervals, 0.88-0.992). The P value is less than 0.0001.
Conclusions: The increased incidence of hair removal may lead to atypical patterns of pubic lice infestations or its complete eradication as the natural habitat of this parasite is destroyed.

The ice sheet expands and contracts yearly. The scary part is if significant amounts of the glaciers melt.
