I also believe Iraq was making weapons of mass destruction too. I mean it's obvious the government was indirectly involved.

steveschneider wrote:There was just something about baseball coming back that meant so much after that tragedy. It’s just a game, how can we even play a game or watch a game after that tragedy? But it’s so interwoven into our way of life of course it had to go on. That Harry Kalas broadcast I posted above gives me goose bumps everytime. It captures that feeling I had when I tuned into Letterman’s first monologue and other shows that were trying resume normalcy. That George W Bush first pitch fires me up everytime I see it. That whole World Series was epic. I’ll never forget the light rain in Arizona of all places. And when it was apparent the Yankees were going to lose and after that hit on Mariano. Seeing that box score to the Mets game just adds to it.

Letterman’s monologue hit me hard. Dave was struggling to talk and I admired his will to get back to trying to make people laugh, though there wasn’t much of that at first. I rewatched the full 8+ minutes a couple of weeks ago, and time has lessened its impact, which is good. The emotion is gone now, but in context, it meant a lot to me. Pretty sure that’s when I first bawled.
My other thought on Dave’s opening was how time has taken its toll on Rudy Giuliani. He’s a laughingstock to at least half the country now, and it’s all self-inflicted. Regardless, we’ll always owe him a debt for his courage in the days after the attack.

Gonna get all corny here, but I'm pretty patriotic. Not for the government, but for the principles it was founded in, and the people who still believe in those principles..

As 9/11 unfolded, I left work early to head home on a long commute and heard this song. It has become my 9/11 song. For me, it is very poignant in a number of ways with some lyrics nailing what I was feeling about the USA.

That seems rather vague. Anyway, if our moral codes and subsequent rights are natural in origin, how do we discover these universal rights and how to we deal with divergent interpretations?

Instead of the "day of" tributes/documentaries here's something a little different but also very powerful.

you know America is in bad shape when a comedian provides us with the impassioned inspiration we so desperately crave.

(this isn't a comment on Stewart. By all accounts, he's a pretty amazing individual. It's a comment on the shameless absence of our 'leaders').

Not really Bob. Most comedians are highly intelligent and well spoken.

My dad was a kid too young for war on Dec 7, 1941, I was already in and out of the Navy by 9/11 but I was thinking the other day about how impactful that event was to his generation and how little it meant to me when I was younger. As I’ve gotten older I have grown to understand the importance of those times. I’m sure 9/11 is similarly abstract to my kids, but I hope I can instill in them an appreciation of history so that someday they also dig into the past and understand why we are who we are now, and how my worldview was shaped by 9/11.

Such a tragic and unforgettable day. Incomprehensible we've had the equivalent of 60 of them since March.
