Dantonio paid his dues before getting his first HC job at Cincinnati, a mere 24 years after his first GA job at Ohio and 3 years as Bearcat HC before MSU.

Dantonio was right person at the right place and right era.  His record and wins over Big Ten rivals verify that.

Agreed with Trevor. Dantonio's first year at MSU was my second year on campus. I was a member of the band, and Dantonio always went out of his way to make us feel appreciated and part of the program. He didn't have to do that - no one would have thought less of him if he didn't - but he took every chance he got to hype us up. The football program took on his personality - no nonsense, with a healthy chip on the shoulder. He was a field marshall on the field, and a genuine class guy off the field. He wanted to win, but more importantly he wanted to win FOR the MSU community. I wish he could have gotten the send off that someone with his success deserved, but he made us believe again. Well deserved place in the HoF.
