My brother lives in Sanford. The whole Edenville dam saga has a lot of back story. The dam needed repair. Who ever owned it said nah, no thanks. Which was supposedly his right. So instead of waiting for failure they opened it. Lake front whine and cheesers (as my brother calls them) freaked out that they went from lakefront to swamp and tree stump front. So they ponied up some cash to do some repairs and got the dam closed again and get their lakefront back. The company running it got their permit revoked for all kinds of shit. Now of course it failed. My brother is livid that the potential is there that these people put everybody in danger to get their lakefront back while fucking everyone down river for a shitty repair job.

How the shit is a dam that controls water flow of a river allowed to be controlled by private entities?

Brother got to his place this morning. Said water is down four feet from last night. The river is usually 21ft below his house. The house in the picture isn’t supposed to be there.

I keep seeing people refer to this as a 500-year flood, but when the disaster is basically man-made, does that really count?

Its what FEMA uses to give the percentage of chance of flood to determine the cost of flood insurance. I live in a .01% flood area, or once in 1000 years, so I get to pay $465 a year in flood insurance.

Or when there was a 500 year flood 34 years ago. "Well, yeah, we called that a 500 year flood at the time, but this...THIS is even more if a 500 year flood."

But to your point, it seems that floods are often man made, a result of failures of man made attempts to control one of the most powerful forces on earth. Add in climate change, and it is hard to call anything a 500 year natural disaster when the natural balance of the world has changed so much during the last 10% of that span.

lol, so the next 500 year flood should be in about 2050. Good point about the climate change rendering current natural disasters incomparable to the past.
