Will give it a whirl. I put some potted marigolds out by the daylillies last night. No further damage done last night and just heard the culprit grunting in the woods when I went out and checked. So it seemed to work.
Posting in a gardening thread, on a day off, before 7am...turning into tGreenway more and more everyday.

Tomatoes are turning yellow... Right on cue, I think we have a perennial fungus.
Kept the deer away this year so the plants weren't ruined by trauma. The flowers the wife planted look better then most years. Cause I've been home to water daily...

Are you going to try to ID and get rid of the fungus? There are some pretty decent organic options available if you don’t want to go the noxious chemical route. Meanwhile, my tomato
plants are starting to ripen. I got a late start on everything. Also trying out some things in my backyard where there’s not all day full sun. I’m hoping to move the entire garden into one corner where it’s out of the way of the Yoga for MILFs classes I lead.

Thai Dragon. Picked a little early (small), but there are about 40 green ones right behind it, so I figured I would divert the energy. I'm going to try to dry these two out before and see how it goes before the others are ready. These are my first ever tomatoes and peppers. Bunch more tomatoes in a few days. The jalapeños are being a bit more stingy.
The lettuce has been the biggest winner and will definitely do again. Pick when needed instead of store bought going bad in the fridge. Re-grows fast. Spinach was good for about 3 cycles, but taking a turn. The require more work. Broccoli I think I'm giving up on. Tall as fuck, but no signs of sprouts. Been losing some leaves because it is thirsty as hell and I haven't watered as much as I should. TDemanding as hell.

Some sort of critter ate a pot of impatiens. Odd that they left a huge patch of ground-level impatiens alone.
I'm pissed. This happened about 2 days ago.

Re: Bob how's your garden?
Everything is dying. I suppose I never cared/noticed before, but since I've been around enough to water these things daily for the last 6 months ...
Actually, real question here... Got raised beds. If I don't water those MFrs daily they promptly dry up (miss one day and they are totally droopy, etc)... Can the dirt go bad in those things? I use miracle grow, so the vitamins and minerals should be OK... Neighbors rarely water and there shit looks fine.

What are you growing? How close together? If they get direct sun all day that might not be great for them

Anyone know if I need to wait for peppers to turn red on the vine or do I pick them and then they turn red?

Yeah direct sunlight. maybe 8-12 inches tomatoes and peppers... nothing crazy. Did have marigolds around the edge. It used to be easier... I'm wondering if the dirt went to dust or something. Maybe get manure and clay for next year?aualum06 wrote:AvgMSUJoe wrote:Everything is dying. It’s just taking longer than I expected and for a moment I thought maybe they needed to be picked first.

Yeah if it is light dirt it can dry out quick. I'm in sand it's a constant water everyday all summer or it gets dry. peppers and tomatoes don't like full sun I believe

Re: Bob how's your garden?
I concur with the above. Tomato plants are also thirsty fuckers. The soil dries out on these before everything else. I have to water it every day, sometimes twice. I got a good crop out of it a few weeks ago. The wife was very impressed. It is going to shit now. I don't have the energy to keep up with daily watering needs. The pepper plant is starting to yellow as well. Lettuce, spinach, spices, etc. all seem to tolerate the direct blazing sun much better and not as sensi if I skip a water day. I thought the cooler August overnight temps would help, but not really. Still gotta water every damn day. Except today

That goes against what I’ve read about both tomatoes and lettuce. In GreenWay Gardens, tomatoes love the sun and really love the oppressive heat, the muggier, the better. Im growing lettuce for the first time and everything I read said grow it in spring and fall when temps are cooler. Huh.

Presently clearing a large space of brush for next years garden. I can’t even with all of these animals eating all of my plants.
I’m just taking a break and posting about it I don’t really have any other thoughts on the matter right now. I’ll update you later.

A fence and stakes from Home Depot aren’t expensive, Travis. And you can use the extra space to plant garlic in October.

Re: Bob how's your garden?
Yeah I know greenway. That’s why I’m clearing out brush. Fuck man.
This year I just sort of planted vegetables where there was space. Probably is supposed to be flowers where I planted them. Whatever. But it’s a tomato here and a pumpkin over there, so I have the fattest animals in the neighborhood and little produce that survives their attacks. I have a nice patch of ground now for next year, just need to build some fencing around it. There’s some shade, which might cause issues, but I planted some lettuce seeds just now as a trial run to see what happens in the next month. (The rabbits are going to eat it, that’s fine.) there’s a section that gets solid sun, so the tomatoes will go there. Gonna cover the whole thing in horse shit in October, till it all in come April then watch the sad starving animals stare at the crops from outside my fence.

My garden experiment this summer is removing the seeds from mini sweet peppers. They’ve been drying out for a couple of months now. I’m going to plant a few to see if they come up. If it works, I’ll have tons of sweet peppers next year.

If those animals are deer remember they can jump 6-8 foot fences

Same here, but some don’t store for very long once they’ve made it to the consumer, which is no shock since they’re coming from Mexico. I want to eliminate the shipping and retail time. No idea if it will work. Some growers engineer their seeds so reproduction won’t work. Just a fun little test. I’ll still buy a couple packets so we don’t go without.

They are deer, and others. I’m gonna put it to a solid 6 feet or so I think. If they get over it, welp. It’ll be the most well protected garden in the neighborhood from what I’ve seen, so I feel like they’ll go after the easier targets first.
