Called my sis near Raleigh. Said she was standing and her husband was sitting. He felt it but she didn't. He described the sensation as a rolling motion.

Saw that.. seems like the epicenter was up in the mountains, in my old stompin' grounds. I don't do the social media thing but my daughter texted and said the family was having quite the conversation about it there.
Saw some pictures and video online. A bit alarming, I suspect.

This consists of a bike shop and record store. There is a bar under the record store, but you have to know the Hold Steady's drummer's favorite color to drink there.

I asked a couple of times in my vacation thread, but you never replied. I just slummed it out in Burnsville instead.Robert J Sakimano wrote:feel free to stop by the Robert J Sakimano Historical District. Might take the wife to the outer banks at the end of the month. Where should we stop before that

between Michigan and the Outer Banks? Or just NC, in general?DWags wrote:Robert J Sakimano wrote: aww man, sorry I missed it. I was preoccupied a lot of the weekend.

if your destination is the Outer Banks, you'd probably go down through through West Virginia. Beautiful country but I'm not overly familiar with that area, as going into western North Carolina, I just take I-75 directly south to Knoxville, then I-40 east. News flash, Ohio is boring as hell. Kentucky is nice once you get out of suburban Cincinnati. Sometimes, I'd leave EL in the afternoon, drive to Lexington, KY and stay the night - maybe around 6 hours. Then about 4 the next day into NC. Always stayed on Man 'O War Blvd. Easy access to the interstate and not far from University of Kentucky's campus. Was fun to spend some time there.. some decent bars and record stores. Watched MSU in the elite 8 last year from a bar there. Kentucky fans love MSU, it seems.
Take a picture of Big Bone Lick State Park sign.. that's a good way to spend 3-4 seconds. Good truck stop in Tennessee.. I forget the exit, but I bought a Reba McEntire t-shirt there once.
There's also a huge porn store on the west side of 75 going south just at the same exit. I don't stop at such places but the best thing about it is that the local jesus freaks put up a huge cross in the parking lot next to it. I guess they use it to ward off sin and the devil or as a landmark to aim their spooge.
Western NC is great, as I say to anyone who will listen. Asheville is nice, but it's almost kind of outgrown itself and has become kind of a cliche. Great little small towns in and around it, though: Waynesville, Hendersonville, Brevard. Lots of outdoor opportunities: whitewater rafting, hiking, mtn biking, etc. Some great brewpubs and restaurants around. If you could get up toward Boone, it's even more beautiful. Blowing Rock is nice, Boone is really cool. Grandfather Mountain is worth some time.
A lot of people like seeing/visiting college campuses. Driving down I-40 toward the coast, you'll go right through Winston Salem (Wake Forest), then as you get to the Research Triangle you could hit Carolina, NC State and Duke. Chapel Hill is nice - lots of button downs and khakis, but the campus is beautiful. NC State is more centrally located in Raleigh. A nice town. Duke is absolutely gorgeous and you can usually sneak into Cameron (pre-COVID, anyway) - regardless of one's feelings about Duke hoops, it's pretty neat to see. You can skip the city of Durham. I doubt there is a college/university in American any more disconnected from the city it's in more than Duke is with Durham.
beyond that area, further east, I'm not really familiar. I think I've been to the NC coast one time (Emerald Isle with my HS girlfriend... we camped there one spring break with some friends).

USGS says the event was short in duration, shallow in depth, and had minimal impact. Sounds about right.

It’s always a good idea to introduce things slowly. Gradually. Start them out with what they’re use to.
