How do we fix college football and the playoffs? The NCAA Bball tournament puts it to shame
Seriously, we're not ver good this year. I'm excited for tomorrow night. We were 15-12. three games over .500. I'm all searching the internet about UCLA, thinking maybe if we get hot and if we make this move, we can make a run. There are 67 other college basketball teams that are feeling like we are. Giddy. Kids on Christmas eve. This is in a year of covid and no fans.
How can we get college football more like this? I know we can't have six games. But what can we do to make a game I love into more than just the thought of hey, it's Alabama and Clemson, and Maybe OSU and choose one other elite team. Whooopie.
Less scholarships to each school? Spread the talent out?
Champion of the conference goes to the playoffs no ifs ands or butts, no rankings no committee?
First playoff game comes from conference championship game?
I like college football more than I like college basketball, but name a more fun weekend than the first weekend of the NCAA tournament.
Is it possible to make college football better or will we just get more of the same every year.

We incentivize the XFL and make it the go to option for kids with pro aspirations who are not interested in being students.

It all begins with the fact that the sport of basketball puts football to shame, so the basketball tournament will always be way better than any football nonsense.

I don't think the level of parity in college basketball can ever be achieved in football. That alone will prevent most of what you are longing for. One diamond in the rough can carry a basketball team all by himself, but that's not really true in football. Maybe a super elite QB, but those virtually never slip through the cracks.

So, my first point was to limit scholarships. What if.....(hell I know this would never happen) we take full rides from 85 down to 65 per school. Talent then gets spread around more. Alabama won't have two back ups better than some teams first team because there just isn't enough scholarships to give out. Wont' that help parity.

How many 4 stars would be willing to walk on at Bama? I'm guessing a lot.

This isn’t the answer but it’s part of it. At the core, hoops is better.
Honestly d wags I have no idea how to fix cfb. It’s very broken. Blowing it up and making it truly amateur may help as wbh said but how do you do that just to cfb?

In my perfect world you do it for both revenue sports.
Also college basketball sucks. I have no idea what you guys are watching. The tournament is great. I love MSU hoops because I love Izzo and his program and I went to MSU for like 12 years and graduated. But the sport is horrendous to watch in a vacuum without a rooting interest.

I was saying in general the sport of basketball is better. Both are terrible products overall, but have their moments.

Re: How do we fix college football and the playoffs? The NCAA Bball tournament puts it to shame
I think the main difference is people accept that the basketball tournament is a "tournament". Football make the mistake of trying to determine a hard line national championship of all of football for the year. There's no "fun" in football. Too much on the line. Name one basketball player who said "nah bruh I'm sitting out. Don't want to get hurt. Gotta protect my draft projection". I love football. But basketball is more fun.

Re: How do we fix college football and the playoffs? The NCAA Bball tournament puts it to shame
Well, America is way more passionate about football. I don't want to go back and research it, but the replacement football players during the strike out drew the Major League baseball playoffs. And this year, well..
Nuggets-Clippers game drew just 1.3 million viewers on ESPN. It was a huge game in that if the Nuggets came out on top, they would have forced a Game 7. As it is, Denver ultimately took the series on Tuesday.
The NFL games on CBS and Fox during the same time slot drew a combined 27 million viewers. That’s an average of 12-plus million more viewers than the NBA game.
Given that we’re talking about the NBA Playoffs compared to the NFL regular season, this isn’t great for NBA Commissioner Adam Silver and Co.
But frankly that's neither here nor there and its' getting away from my original point.
This week is magic in basketball. It's a blast. IS it possible to do this in college football? I'm skeptical as hell.

Yes. We talked about this before.
Cut scholarships and cut rosters (so you wouldn't have schools finding academic scholarships for "walk ons").

Fix the scheduling. Watching a full season of a team putting up 50+ points to impress the judges while they schedule the softest schedule they possibly can isn't a good product. Also, conference expansion diluted the conferences and you have gross mismatches in the conferences that are unwatchable. People want to watch competitive games. Example both MSU and UofM were really bad teams but the game was the best one all year to watch. Why? Because it was competitive.

I hear UCLA and USC are the "Crimson Tide" of college ping pong. I'd probably watch just to see something novel.

In answer to your last questions here, both of them are yes.

Rugby is the greatest sport ever. It has elements of football and basketball, plus even some soccer for those who care. Strength, will, teamwork, passing, foot play, endurance. It’s awesome.

Football really needs to add add more camera angles for official reviews. And make reviews mandatory. Just eliminate the need for a coach to call for one. Make the game perfect by getting rid of all mistakes and questionable calls. You’ll love it, Travis.

I like the bowls. You fuck with my bowls Dwags and we will have words. 4 team playoff seems about right. 6 team with auto conference champs would be ideal, but then you get into byes. 8 is too fucking many. Football ain't hoops where you can play multiple games in a row. Part of the appeal is people bitching about rankings all year.

I agree with this in theory and I think it needs to happen to level the playing field. The problem is you are then taking away opportunities for kids, which I'm not a fan of. Coaches will also use this as their rallying cry to fight it.
You could also make 4-year scholarships mandatory across the board. Pretty sure the BIG (or MSU) has adopted this. Since the leagues run themselves, some won't do it. Coaches will also still find creative ways to get around it, like they do now by running kids out.
There are solutions to both of these problems for someone with a big brain to figure out.
