I don't Joe Montana would make differenceStylesGShmooth wrote:Do some people actually think that Thorne, who has averaged roughly 65 yards/game against power 5 competition, would be making a difference here this season?

Maybe we can get him back after hits the transfer portal again
Wouldn't shock me (the portal part).

Well, if he transfers here to coach special teams it will probably be an upgrade.

Thorne had the right idea, he looked good when the team didn't rely just on the QB for offense. However he jumped from the frying pan to the fire.

Are you asking if we upgrade a position whether it would make a difference? Sure it would. Are you asking if it would make us a top 25 team or a top 5 team in the conference? Of course it wouldn’t.
But if you were a coach who was given a choice between having a left tackle grade out at a 4 or one that grades out at a 6. I’d say most coaches would prefer the up grade.
At this point with us, it’s probably best we aren’t 3-3 or even 4-2. Just get the other guys experience and hope the game slows down for them.

I’ll double down. I still think we’d be at or near bowl eligible with him. In a season that means nothing, it would be great if a new coach had 15 practices with his new team.

Possible. I wish we were bowl eligible for sure. Would help with evaluation and give some momentum for next year.

On the other hand we’d be starting out 0-0 next year just the same but with a quarterback that hasn’t seen a live defense since high school 3 years ago.

There's no guarantee any of the QBs stick around.
Or that we don't grab a QB from the portal.

I haven't seen anything that gives me great confidence in any of the QBs that have played this year.

Yeah, that’s how it goes with first time starters virtually everytime. That’s why their experiences this season will be quite the boon next season, if they stay.NigelUno wrote:Travis of the Cosmos wrote:

You know we didn’t make a bowl last year with throne plus 2 nfl receivers, right? I know it’s easy to say “oh yeah we totally would have if he stayed” but…
I know that our young guys got invaluable experience. You can’t know for sure that those practices (under an outgoing staff) would have happened.

I mean I’m not even touching on him not being very good in any game where he doesn’t have Kenneth walker behind him. I just don’t understand your belief in the guy. I think we’d be 4-7 if he stayed. In fact, I don’t think he makes some of the throws that hauser made today and we’d actually be 3-8.

Are we still pining over what might have been? Really? Why? It's irrelevant.
And BTW...why aren't we pining over Keon? The one guy who would've given opposing D's something to think about regardless of whichever mediocre QB was throwing the ball

Germie had one punt return and one pass thrown his way Saturday vs. Oregon St. Whereas, he’d’ve been a busy bee in Bloomington. Seems like a waste, but if his heart was at UW, there’s not much we could’ve done, though I’m sure winning more games would’ve helped considerably.

I'd guess any QB around next year will be learning a new offense. Not sure how much of an advantage that will give anyone on this year's team.

Extra practice helps. Rules are messed up. You penalize bad teams for being bad.

I’m trying to be nice to Thorne here but guys. Do you really think that 2023 Thorne makes that game winning throw to carr yesterday? Tight window, on the move… best case scenario is an incompletion. I think though that we’re looking at a sack or interception there. I just can’t accept the jumping straight to “we’d have extra practices” while ignoring that he couldn’t get us extra practices last year with 2 nfl wide receivers and an actual head coach who didn’t leave after 2 weeks. I mean, didn’t we lose to Indiana at home? Why are we just assuming the results would be any different?

Yep. I just can’t anymore. by the way, when Thorne landed those dimes to Nailor a d Reed in 2021 ,when he wasn’t injured, on 4th and 1’s against Michigan I decided there and then he’d never buy a beer if we were in the same bar.
Can these two become better than him? Absolutely. Were they this year? FFS, come on.

Re: Can we talk about the athleticism of Thorne?
Thorne didn’t want to play for Tucker and the OC and Auburn gave him an opportunity.
Today Auburn’s offense played its best, most complete game of their season but the defense couldn’t stop a very long 4th and goal after Alabama dug themselves a deep hole.
I refuse to play the “what if” scenarios. Hope players who choose to leave think they made the right choice after their 12th game. But they don’t play for MSU anymore. They chose to leave.
It’s a new era in FBS football with players currently free agents after every season.

I think it is fair to ask for more than this stat line:
5/16, 91 yards, 1 TD, 2 INTs.
