Lansing/East Lansing Hotels
Is there anywhere nice to stay in EL? I sadly haven't been back for 7 years, but just got a $3m research grant with some old colleagues at MSU, so will have meetings there a couple of times a year for the next few years. My travel budget is ridiculous, but the reviews of all hotels in EL and pretty awful. I had meetings in Kellogg back in the day but never stayed there - food at meetings was always OK but their TripAdvisor reviews are terrible. The Marriott downtown seems like the best bet to stumble back to after an evening at the PB, but even their reviews are quite poor. I've been spoiled staying at very nice hotels for work for many years. I'd rather have a friendly B&B than a Homewood Suites.
Also, I'm hoping to plan trips that coincide with football or basketball games - how far in advance should I book hotels for that?
I can't wait to come back though - that fucking bob, I'll buy you an olive burger!
Cheers.

Re: Lansing/East Lansing Hotels
sounds like a plan...
sadly, the Marriott might be your best bet. While not terribly nice, the location is about as good as you're going to get. Kellogg is overrated and sort of feels like a bizarre Frankenmuth-type MSU creation that allowed Johnny Spirit to head the interior design team.
From what I've heard, the on B&B that's basically right behind PB on Albert is pretty nice - it always looks kind of quaint when I walk by. You could check into it.

Even worse, it was the trophy wife of the douche-tastic GM. I was working there during a round of renovations a few of years ago. I was constantly shocked as each section they finished was uglier than the last.

Cym Jim, have you looked at the downtown Lansing Sheridan? I know nothing about the hotel but the area around it has developed quite a bit in the last 7 years. There are lots of new bars and restaurants around Washington Square & the baseball stadium, nothing world class but it's not that bad (for Lansing).

also, if Jim doesn't mind slumming it on CATA, the 1 runs straight from the downtown Lansing area, down Michigan Ave and can let you off anywhere on Grand River.. just don't make eye contact with the other riders on the bus..

CymJim - I've been there for meetings, and golf...the Candlewood Suites, at Forest Akers West, University Club is worth looking into.
It is just off the corner/prong of Forest, Collins near Harrison.

I live, like, 4 blocks from there. I don't need the B&B..Murphy Green wrote:

I stayed at that B&B once. I couldn't handle all the conversation involved. It is the only one I have stayed at so it isn't my thing. Otherwise a great location for visiting EL.

Re: Lansing/East Lansing Hotels
I hear ya.. I've stayed at a few B&B's and always skip the breakfast part of the "B" - I don't want to have to make small talk with people I'm not interested in making small talk with. I'm sure they're nice folks - probably much nicer than I am - just not my thing.Herbie Green wrote:I stayed at that B&B once. I couldn't handle all the conversation involved.
