Airlines were one of the first industries deregulated when at the start of neoliberal rush, started during the Carter administration, to turn the US back to the post War of Rebellion society and bring back the Gilded Age, began.

Admittedly this caused much lower ticket prices.

Now we are seeing that not having additional capacity always online doesn't work well when there are demand and supply disruptions.

Not too sure how much the Department of Transportation can do without a years long rule making process or new legislation from Congress, reregulating in a big way, airlines.
