Four inches from the first storm yesterday. Not sure how much in the next and subsequent rains, but the second wasn’t as powerful as the first.

Was getting semi-worried. Anal-retentive-lawn neighbor hadn't cut the grass in over a couple weeks. It was getting wild. The Pantry wrote:Next door neighbor's lawn is immaculate. Does his own fertilizing/weed killer. Has cut his lawn at least 4 times so far.Robert J Sakimano wrote:

We share a city easement (sidewalk to street) between driveways. When cutting the grass there couple weeks ago he also cut my side of the easement. No problem with that as it was getting nasty.
Charged the battery (it was dead) on my JD rider and cut the grass on Saturday. Figured I'd return the favor and cut his side of the easement.
Was in the garage Tuesday evening and he strolls up the driveway. Said I'd cut his grass too low Apologized and explained my mower only has only one higher setting. Whatever. Never cutting his side again
Relieved to see him out cutting it now. He's a bagger. Long as his lawn got, he's stopping every 5 minutes to empty. Will likely be mowing for another 2 hours and past my

Second night in a row with nonstop lightning. Lots of thunder, too, but the rains won’t start for a little bit. Seems like it’s another night of Big Wet, which is also what Kingston used to do to his bedsheets every night.

slept through any rain/storm that came through my run down East Lansing neighborhood last night.
temp is manageable this morning but the dew point = 68° so my long bike ride this morning will include two water bottles, a Camelbak of water and electrolyte tablets just in case.

Fairly pleasant now. Even better, supposed to cool down a little next couple days
The bad news. Power restored at work an hour ago. Little chance of day 2 working from home

Started raining about 5:30 this morning and just stopped. The retention ponds and creeks are full. Dangerous puddles on the roads. Roof at work was pretty loud most of the day. Also leaking in a couple spots.

Big winds are picking up as the sky darkens. I don’t think the Andrea Gail is going to make it back from the Flemish Cap.

Gonna be a lot of downed trees and limbs and likely power outages. The intensity has backed off a bit, but there’s another half-hour to go. You peeps in SE Michigan should keep an eye on this.

I saw the craziest thing with this wind: Rain was horizontal to the ground, then forced upward. I don’t think I’d ever seen that before.
There’s also a small tree down at Northlawn and Harrison (where the large garden is) and a bigger tree down across the street at the school.

Got to thinking about that pic and who pays for repairs. Getting rid of the tree is obviously the homeowners responsibility. The sidewalk belongs to the city. Will the city charge the homeowner for sidewalk replacement?
And, the old sidewalk needs to be removed before the tree can be removed. Who pays for that?

I'm not so sure about the sidewalk being city responsibility/ownership. For example, in Shelby Twp there are a lot of areas on main roads without sidewalks. When the township decides it's time to add one, they do it and just add the charge to the homeowner's property taxes. I mean, they give you a choice of paying 100% of the cost out of your pocket or adding 100% of the cost to you next property tax bill. Either way, homeowner pays for the improvement. Same kind of deal if they come through and mark your sidewalk as needing repair/replacement.

Always thought existing sidewalks and the "devils strip" (grass between sidewalk and street) were a city easement and its responsibility. Troy comes through every few years and replaces bad sections of sidewalk. Pretty sure there is no charge to the homeowner.Floyd Robertson wrote:The Pantry wrote:

There's a couple places nearby where sections of sidewalk have heaved by up to a couple inches. City has spray painted the heaved faces of them orange to alert pedestrians.
