As I said above, the switching of candidates will be nowhere near that smooth. People's feelings will be hurt and they will not support the new one.

As for the actual mechanics of GOTV, which is critical in a close race, if the new one isn't Harris, they are throwing the entire GOTV effort for the Presidential race out the window, thus a "bloodbath" for the Democratics, up and down the ballot.

Even with Harris there will be a ton of people who will stop volunteering, so a very much watered down GOTV effort.

What is going on in the Democratic Party is political suicide, and they have to know that.

I don’t know what the percentages are, but there are definitely people who make up their mind late in the race. The ones that candidates fight over. Most people vote Democrat or Republican every election. The last two Presidential elections showed how those undecided voted.
